Quote from tkaiser: “In case you're not able to understand why recommending fdisk in 2018 is BS nobody can't help you. ” You see,, I didn't say anything even close to that. (Why insist on spinning yarn off into the cosmos?) What I did say, early in the thread and a couple times since, is "use the OEM's tools". (Simply stated, they know their hard drives better than anyone else and their tools are, generally, easy to use.) As a start, "that" is probably the best course for this user to get a defi…

Quote from geaves: “Could you not use smartctl on drive? from the cli that would check the drive. ” I suppose one could try it, it wouldn't hurt anything. However - since OMV doesn't see the partition (or data) I tend to doubt that the drive would respond to OMV's SMART queries. The OEM utilities I mentioned, generally speaking, state one of three things, good, bad, or failing. This is the first thing I'd do and, since we're talking about an external drive with a USB connection, plugging it into…

Quote from indragm: “can we go back to why my external hdd suddenly has no partition first? lol ” Have you tested your drive(s) with free manufacture test utilities? Drives fail all the time. If it's dead or dying, nothing can be done about it.

  • I got my old EX470 up and running OMV4! It has a 100mbs NIC, 2GB ram, and performance is not high (passmark 475) but it's an AMD Sempron which is 64bit and it has to be faster that an R-PI. And, it's designed for low power consumption. The hardware is pretty good. I took a page from your book and built OMV on another AMD machine. With a custom made cable to plug a monitor into the mobo, I changed the BIOS setup to boot to USB and changed the disk arrangement to JBOD, in accordance with this thre…

  • (For users who may read this thread) Applies to HP EX470 - EX475 (and potentially others.) I built OMV on another AMD 64bit box, using a USB drive. I used the disk change in BIOS, as noted above (thanks to @creamsicle for that info.), to go strictly to JBOD and set BIOS to boot from USB. I got the onboard NIC to work by using a CN2 to VGA cable (custom made), to connect a monitor, and running omv-firstaid after the first boot. To get a DHCP address, it was necessary to do a hard power reset, as …

The address is fine so long as it's in your network and NOT the server's IP address. That appears to be the case. Your server is 192.168.2.150. Pi-hole is 192.168.2.155 so all should work. However, from a previous post, I noticed that your router's DHCP range runs from .2 to .200. You now have two IP addresses, in use, within that range. If possible, I would go into your router and reserve those addresses so your routers DHCP server won't assign them to another host. (Otherwise, it's not the bes…

Quote from Mr.Grape: “Quote from geaves: “To assign a static IP address to something on your network it needs to be outside of the DHCP scope/range ” Hmmm Imho, no ... Or I misunderstand you. Whether the address is static or dynamic does not depend on whether it is out of the dhcp pool. On the dhcp side, I can give any IP from the pool for a specific MAC address and this IP will be static even though it will be in the dhcp pool. ” In the strictest sense, you're right. One can reserve a DCHP addr…

I can see that the address you were using (.220) was out of your scope .2 to .200. (And now it appears to be back in the DHCP range with an address of .57) What seems to be the issue now? Are changes to network settings working? Or are your changes getting the yellow confirmation banner but not actually being set?

My preference is for a Docker, because of shared memory with the host and the minimalist bare-bones approach. However, I appreciate the links. If other packages are bundled in VM's, that work in Virtualbox, they might be useful for exploring and testing other app's without using physical hardware.

Quote from Methy: “Hello, I have some questions about how docker works ” Dockers are mini-Virtual Machines's not unlike a workstation or server VM running in Virtualbox. Some of the differences are: - A full VM can be, and often is, as fully configured as an OS running on real hardware. A Docker, on the other hand, is designed from the start, to be bare-bones. Dockers have exactly what is needed to run the supported app., complete with all dependencies, and very little more. - A full VM usually …

You're right be concerned about 24x7 power consumption. While an old Laptop would be better than an old PC (for power consumption), either of the two will consume far more power than an SBC. An SBC can actually pay for itself in power savings, over time. Take a look at this thread - Energy Efficient Arm Platforms - you might find something you like. When my R-PI or the drive that's attached to it, dies, I'm considering the Rock64 or the newer RockPro64 for good performance and 2 drive attachment…

If you're using individual drives in docks: - Try swapping drives into the other drive's dock . - Power on the R-PI with only one drive at a time. - Replace the USB power supply for the R-PI. (A samsung galaxy smart phone supply, at +2 Amps, will stand in for a test.) When you say "external" drive, at you talking about something with it's own enclosure? Most drives with their own shell, along with internal drive models, have free utilities available on their manufacture's website. (WD, Toshiba, …

I'd have to agree with @geaves. If you can't use Google's DNS in OMV, something is going on with OMV's network settings. BTW: you don't have to used Google's public DNS servers. There are plenty to chose from. DNS servers Take a look here -> guide (page 37)and set up OMV's network interface for a static address. OMV's static IP address should be outside of your routers DHCP scope, but in the local LAN network. For example, my DHCP scope runs from 192.168.1.50 to 192.168.1.99 (50 addresses) 192.1…

My server is rarely down, but for instance if I had a power outage, I could run my modem, router, and rpi on the UPS for a very very long time. ” Umm, I was just …

I've noticed that you're posting "getting started" type problems. Take a look at this Guide; and take the time to start a clean build from scratch. Then, wipe a single drive, format it with EXT4, set up a shared folder and, finally, set up an SMB network share.
