Tuning RAID to increase longevity/life of drives

  • Changed info I provided to something more readable.

The 3 raid drives are all Seagate.

  • Afaik those drives are desktop drives. Depending on your usage, it would be good to set them to sleep if you do not need them. (Or power down the whole NAS via autoshutdown plugin)
It is hard to suggest times for sleep without further information about your usage.

Usage is currently very minimal. It's more of a file storehouse (file are rarely used, older, but are sometimes accessed/referenced) and also a centralized Movie/Picture/Music storage.

Definitely don't want to mess with powering down the whole NAS via autoshutdown, but was more wondering about the APM/AAM/Spindown options for each drive in the RAID, and how it affects ran functionality/replication/speed.

    • APM - Minimum Power Usage with Spindown vs without Spindown?
    • AAM - Minimum Performance vs Max Performance?
    • Spindown times?
