    • Can't log in

I have enabled ssh as per picture in attachment.

Now, when I try to log into the box as root (from any other box in the network) I get the following error:

      Source Code

      1. login as: root
      2. root@10.10.10.204's password:
      3. Access denied

I did reset the root password on the openmediavault shell using passwd but still no luck.

      Am I doing anything wrong?

Are you using root for local and something else for ssh?

There is no default password for root unless you used OMV 0.2. It has to be the password you typed in when you installed. The admin user has a default password of openmediavault but that user is for logging in the web interface only.

Only one root no matter where you login from. If you can login locally, change the password again (passwd) and logout. Then try from ssh. If you can't login with ssh with the new password, I don't know what is wrong. I've never seen a linux system do that.

      [SOLVED]

      Source Code

      1. root@openmediavault:~# groups root
      2. root : users

      Source Code

      1. root@openmediavault:~# more /etc/ssh/sshd_config | grep AllowGroups
      2. AllowGroups root ssh admin

I've added users to AllowedGroups into sshd_config and now it works. Yes I could have added root to the group root or ssh or admin as well. Still works this way...

Ahm, sorry but your post seems wired to me. It is not necessary to modify the SSH config file, i did not have seen your problems until now. In your latest post you tell to add 'users' to 'AllowedGroups' in sshd_config, but in the code section i see 'admin'. What is correct now and what is your exact intention?
The user 'admin' is ONLY used for the WebGUI. SSH is using PAM for user authentication, thus there shouldn't be any different between CLI and SSH. If you want to use SSH with a 'normal' user, then you have to add this user to the group 'SSH' in the user property dialog.

Did you have "Permit root login" unchecked in the ssh section?

On a normal OMV installation user root is ONLY in group root. I assume one of your installed external plugins has corrupted your user management. Thus the problem is not OMV core dependend/related.
