    Hi,

I'm pretty sure most of us knows this. I think the only plugin I'm still missing is a omv-gui for PeerGuardian Linux (pgl). So this is my suggestion for another development in case you search for ideas.

PeerGuardian is a privacy oriented firewall application. It blocks connections to and from hosts specified in huge blocklists (thousands or millions of IP ranges). Its origin seeds in targeting aggressive IPs while you use P2P.

    Thank you in advance!

Never heard of it. What is the advantage over the builtin firewall and the fail2ban plugin?

  • Hi guys,

Sorry for late answer. I'm surprised you don't know this software, but it's OK. It should be well known rather for P2P communities. Basically it runs as a daemon and controls network communication (based on iptables), it forbids making connections for IPs existing on publicly maintaned blocklists. You can select them, merge them, update automatically, make exceptions..

It depends on the effect you would like to achieve, but for P2P purposes I don't think it's good idea to install it and configure on gateway as easily you can make important web services unavailable. It's rather recommended to run it on machine where P2P client is started.

I hope it helps to understand how it's designed. I know for example Transmission can use blocklist, but still this is very basic functionality and pgl allows much more and it can be used for other applications.

Thanks for looking into it, guys.

I don't use P2P. That is why I am unfamiliar with it. Sounds somewhat beneficial for those who do. I definitely would not be the one to make the plugin though. If it uses iptables, would it conflict with OMV's firewall plugin?

  • That's OK. OMV provides some P2P tools, pgl would be good security-related supplementary for it.

As far as I know it uses iptables but rules can be isolated from the rest of configuration, same way it works for fail2ban. I think.. Maybe someone familiar with development should check.
