My goal is to store media data and backup documents from laptops over a home network.
I wonder if i can recycle an old pc, hardware is :
Gigabyte GA-965G-DS3 rev1
Intel core 2 duo
4Gb ram ddr3
known limitations are :
2.2To per disk max due to intel firmware
two raid sata plugs only
Having not much money for a Nas I would like to save as much hardware as possible.
Question is : is it realizable?

Yep, that system will work fine. Might use more energy than a newer system though. You can also add a cheap sata card to add more sata ports. This would also allow you to use drives larger than 2tb.

By the way, why openmediavault is compatible with core 2 duo and FreeNas isn't ? 
OMV is definitely compatible with a system that old. I would think FreeNAS is as well but I don't know much about FreeNAS. OMV is the better choice anyway 
One last thing : could someone confirm raid 5 is realizable with 2+2 sata plugs?
I mean : motherboard has 2 raid sata plugs, so has this Sata card
Despite it is a cheap robust card 
I worry a little for my data and 4 Red WD 1 To.
An other solution would consist to add a 4 plugs sata card which i did not found...

Yep, you can run raid 5 across different controllers.
Power consumption would be high most definitely. With a Q9550 and single SSD, idle consumption was around 115W. For C2D it should still be around 80W.
