kern.log and various other logs are getting huge after a few days

  • My kern.log is up to 3GB and growing daily (it was over 20 and I deleted it)

I am curious if someone can help me decide what I causing this

I have noticed that 4 hard drives that I have that are nearly full keep unmounting could that be the cause perhaps?

I am using WD Red 4TB NAS Hard Disk Drive all around and on 4 drives I have 185-200 GB of free space and those are the ones that keep unmounting. I am using the ext3 filesystem. And I use an rsync job to keep the drives in sync. I was told not to use raid since I use my NAS for video and music files only and that an rsync backup would be good enough.

  • I reboot and everything seems to be normal (at least all the drives are mounted again) I just deleted kern.log and syslog again and will see what happens this time. Also I have noticed rsync.log is rather large as well.
