External Drives disappear while running, The server hasn't rebooted but the drive just stop responding and when i check the file section all the Hard Drives are N/A and they can't be mounted. I'm actually not suere where to start? Should i look at my USB 3.0 drivers? If so how do I go about doing that.

Did you install the backports 3.16 kernel?
-
Good Morning,
Yes I'm using backports 3.16 kernal as my NIC was a e1000
-
Maybe the drives are going to sleep and the kernel doesn't support the usb-to-sata adapter in those units. I would also check usb settings in the bios. You might get better results from an even newer kernel. There are a couple of threads for the 4.x kernel on OMV 2.x. Once OMV 3.x is stable, you will be able to use the backports 4.5 kernel.
-
I'll check into the Bios and see if anything is set to make is fall asleep. The drives are sitting in 2 Media Sonic probox. i'll look into getting the new kernal
-
I checked the bios and there is no settings for USB power controls. I'm thinking that the drives or USB is failing asleep.
-
I think most usb externals go to sleep to conserve power and keep heat down.
-
Which is weird as I had these on my last OMV and they never fell asleep. Different PC though.
-
Guess it is the PC telling them to sleep then. Weird.
-
Quick question, I had SMART turned on all the drives on the old system. Could that have kept them from falling asleep.
-
Yes, especially if you had tests enabled.
-
I enabled SMART and hope that this will fix the issue.
-
I made 2 changes, I activated SMART and i told the drives in Physical disks under advanced power management to have intermediate power usage without standby. This morning the drives are still online. Problem solved i would think.
