OpenMediaVault Email Notification - Spam

  • On January 22nd 2016 I setup OpenMediaVault and running version 2.2.5 right now and one of the feature I enabled was Email notification. It worked fine until March 4th and lately now when we were getting a lot of email every second coming through GWAVA which is unified messaging archiving, security & disaster recovery for Email. Where we noticed we received an every second email coming from OpenMediaVault. So it looks like this server acts like sending spams to where not sure but at the end it crashing our GWAVA server. Do you know where can I find log files about sending email from OpenMediaVault?

    Thank you,

    Look in /var/log/

Did you try disabling and re-enabling the notifications in the notifications tab?

  • We had to disabled Email Notifications all together and remove all settings from there to prevent it this happen also Systems Administrator blocked all incoming traffic from openmediavault server to prevent receiving a million email and crashing our GWAVA server. We can not allow this happen again because it cause a huge problem for our non-profit organization.

Agree, notifications are not sent without sense. But somehow it happen but not sure what and how yet.

Here it is what I know so far I got log file from our GWAVA server. I am not allowed to post this file but I can share partial/fragment information from one of the many log files. Just this log file is about 102MB in size I copied info from and we have hundreds of these files.
Please note I had to rename our email address to mediavault-2@xxxx.xx.xx (fake) as well our real public ip address to an unreal (fake) ip address 98.153.25.245.

We have open case with GWAVA company and it is under GWAVA investigation.

I have to check log files on the openmediavault server to see if I can find any evidence there. I need to figure it out how to check them :) So help appreciated here.

    Thank you,

  • We don't have content of the emails from the OMV system... I am hoping to find the log files from the OMV system which it will tell me more.

However there is another evidence from other log file from the GWAVA server, emails from the OMV were sent in the loop but not content of the emails either from this log file.

I share again a partial/fragment information from one of the log file.

  • I got log files from the OMV and here it is partial mail log information. I can't share this file because it is too big. Some mail.log files are over 1GB when unzipped and I cannot open them. Should they not be smaller files in size so we can look and read them for troubleshooting purposes?

    AND SO ON WITHOUT END!

This prove the server sent spam emails... I think this server, it suppose or should stop (quit after a few try) send them if cannot reach recipient but it tried to send from mediavault-2@xxx.xx.xx to mediavault-2@xxx.xx.xx without stoping...

This OMV server we setup this Email Notification to send email externally. I believe there is a bug there?

    Any thoughts?

  • What do you expect. You are configured an email recipient which does not exist on the receiving server.:
    Aug 7 07:35:47 mediavault-2 postfix/smtp[22282]: E46F8E408BC: to=<mediavault-2@xxxx.xx.xx>, relay=193.10.58.78[193.10.58.78]:25, delay=0.76, delays=0.04/0/0.21/0.5, dsn=5.0.0, status=bounced (host 193.10.58.78[193.10.58.78] said: 550 No such recipient (in reply to RCPT TO command))

correct this and you should be fine.
@votdev of course throttling the mail process on 5xx answers might be a good idea, but I do not know how to implement this (seems to be a new message id on each delivery, so it is not postfix)

If you got help in the forum and want to give something back to the project click here (omv) or here (scroll down) (plugins) and write up your solution for others.

  • Limiting the rate postfix will send mails will not limit the rate some process wil enqueue mails (which will not be sent due to the rate limit in postfix).
My guess is that something is wrong with@'bksmartit's omv and some process is trypint to send mails like hell, which do not get delivered due toi the wrong recipient.

    What is the result of

    Code
    mailq

    on the omv server?

  • I need to clarify a bit more for all of you. I forgot to mention Email Notification settings...

Our OMV Server Email Notification was setup as:
    General settings: Enabled
    SMTP server: 193.10.58.78
    Sender email: mediavault-2@xxx.xx.xx[/email]
    Receipient: john.brown@xxx.xx.xx[/email]

Please note we used Sender email as a fake email coming from the OMV server: mediavault-2@xxxx.xx.xx but Recipient is a real email: john.brown@xxxx.xx.xx.

  • OK, I see.

    Code

So your GWAVA server (don't know what that is) has not accepted the message and the log above is showing that postfix is trying to deliver a error message to the sender who's message has been denied.
postfix tries to deliver to mediavault-2@xxxx.xx.xx and the mail server for this is the server itself? Is xxxx.xx.xx an official domain owned by you with an regular mail server or is it the ip of the omv server?

  • To Zoki,

I am not sure what you mean by mailq source code on the omv server? Where I should find this?

    I think you mean /etc/cron.daily/openmediavault-flash-mailq?

If yes, then here it is code from this file I have from this OMV server.

    set -e

    . /etc/default/openmediavault
    . /usr/share/openmediavault/scripts/helper-functions

    if [ "$(omv_config_get "//system/email/enable")" = "0" ]; then
    postsuper -d ALL
    fi

  • I am not sure this will work.
nowadays most services check the sender email against user account.
what you trying to do is spoof the email sender and it would trigger spam mark.

the from needs to be the same as the sending account you are using to send the message (as in the email on thew account related to userid/password you setting up)

as an example my email is vl1969@domain.com
    thus the setting would be

    sender: vl1969@domain.com
    recepient : my otheremail@domain.com
    user : vl1969
    password XXXXXx

  • actually I just checked (put some dummy email in the sender box)
and hotmail for once does not care. it simply uses my actual email as from option and ignores what is in the senders option. but exchange mail might be different
just checked and it is different for exchange, it uses sender box as real account email and will not send if the sender account does not exists.
your sender email must be a real mailbox on the system, not some dummy one.

  • mailq is the command to show the mail queue on the omv server.

This might be what is happening:

    • OMV tries to send an email to mediavault-2@xxxx.xx.xx, probably a message, some mail can not be delivered
    • OMV connects to your regular mail server and tires to deliver a mail to mediavault-2@xxxx.xx.xx
    • Your Mail server tells the omv server there is no mailbox by that name
    • OMV tries to inform the sender of this mail (mediavault-2@xxxx.xx.xx as well) of this error
    • And now we continue with step 1.

Create a proper mailbox on your regular mail server.

  • not 100% sure but my setup does not do that (although I am running test VM with OMV 3.0.30)
it gets an error and stops.
I just reconfigured my test VM just as OP setting
twice using a hotmail account and office365 account

    sender : dummyemail@ffffff.com
    recep : real email
    user: real user

in both setup I only got one notification about bad account.
and in hotmail it was because I put wrong password. once password was ok I got the message through.
on exchange/office365 it told me no account found.

but depending on the settings there maybe like 10 different emails going out at times for different services.

  • ... It worked fine until March 4th and lately now when we were getting a lot of email every second ...

@bksmartit And do yourself a favour: get a sysadmin (4 Montah a mail every second makes ~ 10.000.000 mails until you notice)

  • Zoki; this happen randomly not constantly 4 Months but periodically since March. I shouldn't say the server worked fine until March 4th.
Next time I will be more careful what I say on the forum because someone may missunderstood/give a wrong judgement.
We had a so much going here + this problem to figure it out.

    Thank you
