Slow SMB speed - capped somehow to 1,8MB

  • Hi there.

    I've installed OMV 2.x on the new server and somehow I'm unable to reach more then 1,8MB upload rate - this is the maximum I've reached after setting the extra options from thread:
    Extreme slow samba speeds

    Without this options I reach 1 - max 1,2MB upload rate. My internet connectivity is 50/50, confirmed also by the speedtest.

    This is test server, so I've provided it with only 4GB of ram and 2 vcpu, but during upload, load didn't jump even through I uploaded 600+ small files.

    Server info:

    There is only one nic on the server and it's on gigabyte link:

    This extra drive for OMV is ext4:

    # hdparm -Tt /dev/sda6

    /dev/sda6:
    Timing cached reads: 5078 MB in 2.00 seconds = 2541.21 MB/sec
    Timing buffered disk reads: 786 MB in 3.00 seconds = 261.97 MB/sec

    Iperf result:

    Speed:

    # hdparm -I /dev/sda6 | grep -i speed
    * Gen1 signaling speed (1.5Gb/s)
    * Gen2 signaling speed (3.0Gb/s)

    Any thoughs what could be wrong/improved?

    What hypervisor?

    So, I assume you are using Parallels? What network adapter are you using for the VM?

  • Yes, Parallels is hypersvisor.

    # lspci | egrep -i --color 'network|ethernet'
    00:05.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82545EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper)

    Do you not have permissions to look up this info in Parallels? Just curious...

    I'm not sure what the problem is if you have an Intel network adapter. I would try install the backports 3.16 kernel (there is a button to install it in omv-extras).

  • We've done some additional tests and we're somehow able to achieve 3-4MB without any problems. Weird, as nothing was changed.

    I though it could be maybe because I've updated OMV to 2.2.9., however I had one machine 2.2.6. and speed was also there. Most likely some internet issues internally. I will keep you updated if something changes.

  • Issue is still present - those 3-4MB was just temporary. Upload speed has been tested via 4 different locations and I've reached max 1,2 up to 1,8MB upload speed.

    I've even configured one ubuntu GUI machine in new datacenter which has link 150/150Mbits and I get upload speed via SCP 15-17MB, however smb traffic is capped as mentioned.

    Is there anything on the omv side I could do for this?
