Can't update from webgui

  • Hi,

    I'm on omv 2.2.8 on a NL40.

All is fine, except that from 2 or 3 weeks, I can't update from the dedicated GUI tab.
I receive mail notifications for new updates, updatingworks from ssh CLI (apt-get update), but update area of webgui stay stay empty, even when I clic on Verify button. The box "Checking for new updates" appears, the blue bar come and go for a few seconds, and it return yo a white zone.

I've made researches about that, but can't find anything.

Anyone as an idea ? Thanks for helping.

    Regards,

    DM.

Would need the rest of the error message either the repo was down at the time or your connection couldn't reach that repo.

You need to set your DNS server. Not sure what youtube video you are watching. Sounds like it might outdated.

Yes in the web gui. You don't need to mess with the modem/router/etc and you definitely don't need the dnsmasq plugin.

Go to System -> Network -> Interfaces
    Select your network adapter
    Click Edit
    Scroll down to Advanced Settings.
Fill router IP address or 8.8.8.8 (google's dns server) in DNS Servers field.
    Click ok.

  • OK, I'm a complete idiot. When you say 'network adapter' (nitwit adapter, in my case) I'm not sure what I'm supposed to see, since there is no label called Network Adapter. Is that eth0 (which is the only item listed)? Or do I need to add something?

I have changed the DNS Servers to show 8.8.8.8 under the eth0 Interface Name, but still getting that voluminous error message when I try to Check for Updates or Upload Plug-ins.

BTW, you have been a fantastic help.

I didn't say eth0 because not all systems are labeled eth0. So, I said network adapter.

I would need to see that error message.

  • OK. Here's the first part of the error message. It's the same one I attached yesterday. I have added the full thing (over 10k characters) here as well.

  • Looking at the error message I sent in my last post, could it be as simple as not having turned on FTP?

Maybe I have a corrupt installation?

ryecoaaron, you said in another post that USB stick for booting would be fine, with this caveat:
"USB stick is fine as long as you install omv-extras and then the flashmemory plugin right away."

But since I can't load omv-extras and get the flashmemory plugin, am I chasing a red herring?

BTW, I haven't mounted any harddrives yet. Is that a problem?

  • I'm beginning to think I might have a bad installation. I tried the root command to install the omv-extras and it comes back with "Resolving omv-extras.org (omv-extras.org)... failed: Name or service not known. wget: unable to resolve host address 'omv-extras.org'

From root, I pinged 8.8.8.8 to see if I was getting through to the web and the transmission and receipt of packets was fine.

    I'm dead in the water.

  • I definitely do not have internet connectivity to the outside world. I ran omv-firstaid and chose #6 - Clear local upload package repository. I get a series of "W: Failed to fetch http://security.debian.org/dis…es/contrib/source/Sources Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname"

There are several items it was trying to fetch with the same failure.

I'm losing confidence this can be resolved easily. :(

Without dns, I don't know how to help. It might be a network issue. It might be a bad usb stick already. Hard to say. Anything else is going to fail because DNS isn't working. I would reinstall.

  • Yeah, I found the DNS servers IP's on my router admin, and plugged them into eth0, but to no avail. I'll try a reinstall. How much longer will you be on? Is there a test from the command line that I can perform to verify no WWW access?
