Virtualbox no RDP-Connection possible

  • port number is only for VNC. it is like 9000 range right?

why don't you start RDP client and use the VM IP to connect?

  • Actually I was intelligent for that but I prefer to use mRemoteNG and here I have to insert a PW for the VM and if I do so, it doesn't work..

    with TightVNC it works

no insult was intentional, just pointed out that port number in VB is for VNC connections
I have never see it connected as RDP. so don't know it it possible.
TightVNC works because it is ,well VNC protocol as expected.
never used mRemoteNG so can not comment on that, does it exists for windows ?

  • Hi,

the extension pack for VNC has a well known and long standing issue with nonUS keyboard layout. This is a big mess with windows vms. Therefore I prefer working via RDP Client for this occasion.

With OMV3, the VNC extension pack seems to be the default. It took me some time to find this out.
This problem did not exist with the virtual box plugin in OMV2. I worked with the RDP-Client from Windows without any hassle.

I tried switching back to the oracle extension pack with RDP by

    Code
VBoxManage setproperty vrdeextpack "Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack"

(see http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch09.html#otherextpacks). But this did not work.

According to https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=75620 there seems to be an Ubuntu-Branch of Virtualbox with buildin VNC. Is the OMV-Plugin based on this branch?

    So I have no idea.

Does anybody know how to use RDP on the Virtualbox plugin of OMV3?

    OMV 3.0.70

  • FYI, for some time I have been using MobaXterm for my remote connections. it's free for home use
and you can have up-to 12 sessions configs stored for fast connect.

it is a very nice Client with multi protocol capability.
you can actually connect to all common servers

    • Full X server and SSH support
    • Remote desktop (RDP, VNC, Xdmcp)
    • Remote terminal (SSH, telnet, rlogin, Mosh)

this way you can have one client for all :)

The plugin uses the virtualbox package from the Debian jessie-backports repo. The latest extensions may not be installed though.

The version of the extension pack matches the version of the virtualbox package:

I didn't mean that was causing the issue. I was just throwing that bit of info out there.

  • Do get rid of this, finally I decided to take the hard way: removing VNC:

Now, I have RDP. Nothing else.

Thanks mate, it worked with virtualbox 5.1.26 and the outdated 5.0.5 phpvirtualbox, RDP is so much better.
