Kodi Plugin

  • I'm interested in making a Kodi plugin that opens Kodi on boot and exits to the cli if you need to get back to it.
I was also thinking of putting in a delay of about 5 secs if you wanted to boot to cli for some reason.

So I was wondering on what people think and if it would be possible.

The reason I'm thinking of doing this is that my server has a tendency to transcode media files which sometimes crashes it.

Where with this I just plug it into the TV and leave it.

It will be adding a lot of gui though that plex doesn't have.

  • isn't it is a default behavior for Kodi?
once installed it boots into Kodi by default and you can exit into CLI or if using KodiBuntu to Lubuntu desktop
you will need to install backport repo for it though as per Kodi WiKi

you will need to install backport repo

I'm trying to determine negative side effects of enabling the backports repo by default with omv-extras. Right now it has lower pinning so it won't install most things. It does upgrade the firmware which I'm not sure has any problems with the standard 3.2 kernel.

Well is there a way to put a check if it's enabled on plugin install?

Nope. It either has the packages available or doesn't. It is looking better that I will enable the backports repo by default. The firmware issue was not a problem after all (just installs additional firmware from non-free repo). Just need to check a few more things and maybe wait for some feedback to this idea.

  • I would LOVE to have Kodi plugin out of the box (however, already for OMV 4.x)! Actually, this is exactly what I want - to have OMV back-end, and a Kodi as an always-on front-end (I mean, turn the TV on and Kodi is there).

Do you have any news/plans regarding this plans?

Nope, this is bad idea to have OMV and any kind of gui on the same system. Buy an arm board to run libreelec or something like that if you want kodi. Pretty sure there will never be a kodi plugin. You could probably run kodi-server in a docker.
