Remove some kernel?

  • hi guys :)
I want to know if it's possible to remove some old an unused kernel. As you can see, I really have a ton of entry, this thing really tilt me, since I love to have a clean OS :(

I usually keep the most recent two kernels. What is the output of: dpkg -l | grep linux-image

    omv 7.0.5-1 sandworm | 64 bit | 6.8 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 7.0 | kvm 7.0.13 | compose 7.1.4 | k8s 7.1.0-3 | cputemp 7.0.1 | mergerfs 7.0.4

I installed the kernel backport from omv-extra. But how can I know wich version is? :(

I assume you are using the 4.7.2 kernel?

    apt-get purge linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 linux-image-amd64 linux-image-4.5.7-fts-amd64

Should leave you with two kernels with two entries for each.

Can't see your pics. Why not attach them using the forum as an attachment instead of another site?

Not sure why they need to be removed but update-grub is finding those kernels and adding entries. What is the output of:

    find / -name "vmlinuz*"

You must still have grub installed on one of your other drives. Funny that vmlinuz didn't show up in /boot/

I don't know what you have done with your system. Did you put grub on the raid array?

Not sure why this is a problem but what is the output of: update-grub

  • Sadly it seems normal :/

    root@NAS:~# update-grub
    Generating grub configuration file ...
    Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-4.7.2
    Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-4.7.2
    Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-4.7.0-0.bpo.1-amd64
    Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-4.7.0-0.bpo.1-amd64
    done
    root@NAS:~#

Then I reboot and I still have the kernel on /sda2

I installed OMV on the hard disk the first time, then installed it on the SD card since it wasn't possible to build the raid1.

I wasn't expecting that command to fix it. I wanted to see the output. Your grub config must be read from a different drive. So, when it boots, it reads the old config even though you updated the config. Is the hard drive you installed OMV on the first time still in the system?

Formatting doesn't always remove the mbr where grub is installed because you are formatting the partition not the whole drive.
