Trying to install something via SSH ..... Need your advice.......

  • Hello,

I am hoping to find someone who can actor as a guide and a mentor as servers and linux is fairly new to me.

I am trying to install Logitech Media Server and in another thread I have been advised that I need to use SSH to run the install.

I need some support to install the software over SSH and wondered if anyone is willing to help me and guide me with this?

So far I have enabled the SSH on my OMV (See picture below) but I am not sure what to do next.

If you could help me please leave a message below.

    Download putty
get the hostname or ip address that you put in the browser to go to the OMV web interface.
    start putty
    enter root@ip_address_from_above into hostname box.
    click Open
enter the root password you set at installation time
Now you are at command line
    enter
    wget http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/7.9/sc/fb1383f/logitechmediaserver_7.9.0~1457466777_amd64.deb
    dpkg -i logitechmediaserver_7.9.0~1457466777_amd64.deb

Please try ctrl-shift-R and read this before posting a question.

Please put your OMV system details in your signature.

  • first of all you need to tell us what machine/OS you will be using to connect via ssh.

FYI, I can not tell you how to install LMS. you have to follow the directions on other how-to
I will help and explain to you how to work via ssh though.

here is the thing, if you have access to the local command line of OMV machine as in the actual machine you are running OMV on do have keyboard and monitor hooked up to it and you can do all commands there, you do not need ssh. you can just login to machine directly.
if on the other hand, you have the hardware stashed away somewhere(mine is in the basement in the small rack, and I really do not want to stay there and do anything longer than 5-10 min as there is no desk, chair or anything to sit on ) than that is where ssh comes in.

    so lets begin,
on the PC you will do all remote stuff from you need a client capable off SSH.
if your main PC runs Linux you have all you need there.

just start the terminal, type " ssh <your user you will use to login>@<your OMV IP> " press enter.
example (my user is vl) "ssh vl@192.168.174.10" ENTER
OR you can simply do SSH and the IP, it will ask you login credential later.

this will brings up the back screen (or depending on your terminal setting what ever the back ground is)
and ask for password or login and password

type in your info, press enter and you are on your OMV server command line screen using SSH connection.

now just follow the LMS how-to directions and commands

once done type exit and close the terminal.

Mac PC works the same way, run the terminal and all is as Linux.

if you run Windows though it gets a bit complicated as Windows does not have built in SSH client.
you need a third party app like Putty or MobaXterm

Putty is very popular and simple to use. MobaXterm is multi protocol app that have support for like 10 different remote connection protocols including RDP, VNC and SSH.
I like it very much to use it on windows.

so download and install one of them , start up a session, put in your credentials into the app and connect. once connected all is the same as above.

    hoe it helps..

  • Thanks for being helpful @ryecoaaron - That is the most useful advice anyone has provided so far, it's really appreciated.

I logged in via SSH fine but when I try to run the command I get the following message

Can you help find out what is going on as it looks like it didn't install properly :(

  • Hi @vl1969

I am actually using a Mac and found it easy to run SSH via the terminal, (much easier than I thought)

Anyway so no I know how to easily access my server I now need to get the correct command to run to install the software.

The one suggested gave me the following message

    root@openmediavault:~# wget http://downloads.slimdevices.c….9.0~1457466777_amd64.deb
    --2016-12-16 16:40:50-- http://downloads.slimdevices.c….9.0~1457466777_amd64.deb

    2016-12-16 16:40:50 ERROR 404: Not Found.

Do you have any idea what that means and where I can find the correct command?

Thank you for your help and support with this :)

  • it means the location of the link is not there, bad link?!

    try this link instead

    wget http://downloads.slimdevices.c….9.0~1481407550_amd64.deb

    or this one
    wget http://downloads.slimdevices.c….9.0~1481874538_amd64.deb

not 100% sure what is the difference , I think the second one is older

Thank you for helping me I think we might have cracked it. If it working I'd like to show you both my appreciation. Do you use reddit? I would like to gift you Reddit Gold.

The package downloaded perfect this time.

    Then I ran

    Code
    dpkg -i logitechmediaserver_7.9.0~1481874538_amd64.deb.2

    and got the following message

    Code
(Reading database ... 38170 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace logitechmediaserver 7.9.0~1481874538 (using logitechmediaserver_7.9.0~1481874538_amd64.deb.2) ...

No process in pidfile '/var/run/logitechmediaserver.pid' found running; none killed.
    Starting Logitech Media Server.

Can you tell me what this means?

How can I check if it installed correctly and how would I access settings etc if it is installed correctly?

Thanks again for all your help :)

  • just navigate in webbrowser to your <OMV IP>:9000

  • no need :)

keep in mind that LMS package you just installed has absolutely nothing to do with OMV so it will not be in OMV WebUI. LMS has its own WebUI

let say your OMV server WebUI is @ 192.168.1.20 (since I am not sure your IP scheam let's pretend)
however some apps have their own WebUI and LMS do to.
since it is running alongside of your OMV setup
the way to get to it is by adding the port it is listening on, by default LMS uses port 9000 (which is a pain since if you ever want to use VirtualBox it uses the same set of ports and thus need to be changed )

anyhow, just type in 192.168.1.20:9000 in your broweser (obviously use your own IP not mine)

  • @vl1969

This is similar to what I do to access PLEX which is running on my OMV - I go to [my ip]/:32400/web/ and PLEX has its own dashboard

I just tried to access [my ip]/:9000

But I see the following (see below) can you suggest what to do next?

  • there should not be any "/" between IP and :9000

    should be [my ip]:9000

    omv 3.0.56 erasmus | 64 bit | 4.7 backport kernel
    SM-SC846(24 bay)| H8DME-2 |2x AMD Opteron Hex Core 2431 @ 2.4Ghz |49GB RAM

    OS on 2×120 SSD in RAID-1 |
    DATA: 3x3T| 4x2T | 2x1T

  • there should not be any "/" between IP and :9000

    should be [my ip]:9000

The image below is what I see when I type [my ip]:9000

I thought we were almost there but now I am worried we aren't any closer.

Are you OK to still continue to help me please? Any idea on what we can try next?
