Media files can't play remotely.

  • Hello,

I been using OMV3 (fresh installation) for two months now, and I didn't pay attention about this Emby/Plex video playback remotely until last week.
I tried several attempts with the old Share folder, but it doesn't work.
    So, I created a new Share folder with default permissions = 2755, root:users; sub-folders = Zero:users. NO ACL.
Un-installed Emby, re-installed Emby, but no dice.

If I play the media files from local network, no issue.
Emby/Plex use the same share folder.
All appropriate ports are forwarding in the router.
When I play the mp3 or mp4, the files are stuttering/buffering.
It sometimes play if I let it buffering more than 5 mins.

    I ran out of idea.

  • Hello,

Do you have any error message or media just can not buffer?

  • I had problem on PLEX with transcoding media over internet (I'm a freak and I use source quality over internet :P) and I found one useful option:
    Settings>SERVER>Transcoder and there I've added:
Transcoder temporary directory to /tmp/ (where /tmp dir have more free space then my media to be played)

Please try this and let me know. Eventually you can post some settings of your PLEX server so I can try to help.
    I didn't use EMBY - for me PLEX+KODI :)

  • Ok, I check that tonight.
My videos are pre-transcoded to mp4.
Plex/Emby don't need to transcode anything, but play directly.
Assume my videos are not transcoded, then mp3 should play fine, but it doesn't.
Overall, Plex, Emby, NextCloud can't play any media remotely.

  • I don't think this has to do with network speed or file permissions.
By default, others have R/X permissions.
If the permissions are wrong, then regardless whether Emby/Plex play the files locally or remotely, it will not able to.
I tried with HTTP & HTTPS, but same result.

  • Created a transcoder temp dir doesn't make a difference.
