RAID5 using drives instead of partitions?

Hi there!

Quick question regarding creation of a raid:

When I create a RAID5 array, OMV uses the complete drive (like /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, ...).
All the manuals I find in the internet regarding RAID-creation they allways create a partition on the drives first and then make a raid out of them,
So, what is the correct way? Any downsides on using the full drives?

OK, fine with me.

I just was curious since all the instructions on "how to create an array" I found were quite particular on what is the correct way to generate the needed partitions.
Nice side-effect: The datarates I measured on the 'new' array are quite a bit higher (50%) like they were before ...
