Which RAID or HBA card

  • I'm using a Intel Atom/Avoton C2570. The mainboard has not enough SATA ports. I want to run a software RAID to not be dependent to dedicated hardware. At the moment I have 4x WD Red drives as RAID6. Later I want to add up to 4 drives extra.

So I'm looking not for a RAID controller but for an HBA. Is there a cheap device which can be safely used?
I can find some interesting devices like

    Dell PERC H200
    HP H220
    HP Smart Array H240
IBM ServeRAID M1015 (which can be flashed to 9211-8i)

Which one to choose? Or is there a better one in this price range? (An original LSI 9211-8i for about 300€ is too expensive for me)

  • additional note,
it looks ok for me, raulfg3 suggest
but I heard there is fake version 9211-8i
do not buy too cheap, not verified sourced one

The Dell PERC H310 is another card that can be flashed with LSI firmware. Should be good quality and looks cheap on ebay.

  • You lucky ones. Ok, 300 EUR was a bit too much, but when I want to buy an official, original, brand new LSI 9211-8i from a german dealer, I pay much more than you. See on eBay. Sure, I can buy _original_ hardware from China, but this seems very suspect to me, as it costs only half the price.
As you can see here it looks like a LSI 9211-8i, but there is no LSI logo near the PCIe pins!? So, not sure if I want to buy a device from China.

It is just has Dell's badging on it. Reflash it with LSI firmware. Plenty of blogs about doing that.

  • Old topic, but bringing it up again. @ryecoaaron I've bought a Dell Perc H310 now and flashed it to IT mode. Now, as my 6TB drives are too small, I want to upgrade, but I read, that 9211-controllers do not work with drives having native 4k sectors, but with 512e emulation.

    - Does anyone know, if these flashed controllers support 10TB drives with 512e?
    - Is there any other cheap HBA, that supports drives with native 4k sectors?

My 8TB Seagate Archive drive works just fine with the 9211-8i and as far as I can tell, is a native 4k drive. In Linux, it reports that it has 4k physical sectors but uses 512 byte logical sectors. They are aligned though. So, in theory it shouldn't cause any problems. Where did you read they don't work with the 9211?

  • I thought about buying 10TB 4kn drives instead of drives with 512e emulation

Can you please name a hard drive type which has no 512b sector emulation? This information is new for me. I thought there is always an 512b emulation for such systems which cannot detect AF.

BTW: It is not the best to use such big drives in a Raid szenario because:
    a) it takes ages to rebuild
    b) the bigger the disk the higher the risk of some defective data sectors, which can be critical in case of rebuild

Then you are using 4k/512e drives, but no *4kn* drives

From what I found, the 8TB Seagate Archive is a 4kn drive. That is why it doesn't work in a drobo.

  • I own a U-NAS810 case and I'm going to upgrade my 6TB setup to a 10TB RAID6. My favorite at present is a HGST He10 10TB. This drive is available as 4k/512e *and* as 4kn model. There are rare tests which show that native 4k sector handling is an improvement in speed over emulated 512byte sectors. So why buying 512e instead of 4kn (regardless of price)?
    I don't know of drobo.

There are rare tests which show that native 4k sector handling is an improvement in speed over emulated 512byte sectors.

A single drive will still saturate gigabit. A four drive raid 5 array will easily saturate a couple of gigabit adapters. So, I don't see the point. If you need that much speed, spinning disk may not be the way to go.

Drobo makes commercial NASes. I don't have or want one. I only brought them up because native 4k drives don't (didn't) work on their hardware. The 8tb Seagate Archive drive was one of those drives. So, it was an extra verification that it is a native 4k drive.

  • Alright. As I have assembled the NAS on my own and I'm using bonding on the installed SuperMicro board ;) So I can saturate the actual disk bandwidth. And it's not only the network bandwidth. Even parallel user connections with many small requests will benefit of 4kn, IMHO. As my system is a custom build. I'm looking for a cheap HBA now :) I mean, 4kn was released in 2010 or so...and as there are real benefits, why not using it?
