Considering to buy an Intel NUC

  • Im considering buying an Intel NUC to use for OMV, but i havent forund any threads in here about Intel NUCs..


    Im just wondering if Intel NUCs isnt optimal for small NAS build?

    OMV works well on NUCs but I would avoid any system where you have to use usb drives. If you get a NUC that can take one sata drive and you ok with that capacity, it will work well.

    Why would you avoid usb drives?

    USB drive are meant to be portable not permanent. If you are going to use a drive permanently, sata is much better.
    You can't get all the drive info over usb.
    A lot of usb enclosures make the drive run hot.
    Some usb enclosures control the drive spinning up/down. I don't want my drives spun down.
    I use 3.5" drives which would require a separate power supply.
    usb isn't as fast as sata.
    mdadm raid is very unstable with usb drives.
    lots of people think you can disconnect usb drives any time (usually without unmounting) and this gives OMV/Linux problems.


    Those are my personal reasons/suggestions but I'm sure there is more.
