[GUIDE] How to reduce or grow your Logical Volumes (LVM management)

  • I made some bad choices when defining the sizes of my Logical Volumes while installing OMV. After backing up about 3.5 TB of data I found I had to increase one LV and decrease another.

I found this how-to that explains how to do it: http://www.tecmint.com/extend-and-reduce-lvms-in-linux/

I did not quite follow the steps but used this how-to as a guide to resize. Worked like a charm :D

I must admit I used the OMV web interface to remount my resized shares

If your a noob (like me) this guide will surely help you.

    Just a couple of notes...

1 - When using lvextend, use the -r flag to automatically resize your filesystem.

2 - Reducing an LV works fine but be very careful when shrinking a filesystem. I have seen it go wrong many times.

Please try ctrl-shift-R and read this before posting a question.

Please put your OMV system details in your signature.
Please don't PM for support... Too many PMs!

  • You are absolutely right about shrinking the filesystem. Thanks for the warning!

I did not know about the -r option in lvextend. Good to know when I have to resize again in the future
