That was my idea over the holiday...still hasn't happened :( and it was also an idea to test out dd using my Mint laptop rather than win32image on a spare W7 laptop which takes 3 hours to read and write an image.

Good grief, 3 hours? 8o With 2 drives, it's no wonder why you've been reluctant to clone. I've been reading and writing 32GB images to/from drives in roughly 30 minutes each way (1 hour). (If you're not using h2testw_1.4 to "precertify" the destination drive as error free, Win32Diskimager can do a secondary verification after a write.) In my case, I've using a fairly quick client, and I'm using USB 3.0 drives in 3.0 ports. For speed, that can make a difference.

Still, from a process point of view, this is yet another reason why having 3 boot drives is a real good idea.
    - Take the server down - 30 seconds
    - Boot on the master (the 3rd drive) - 1 minute or so
    - Take all the time you need to read your working drive and write the 2nd drive. (Since all NAS functionality is on the master, it could stay in overnight if needed.)
    - On the other side - take it down, pull the master, and you're back up on the 2nd drive. It's 1.5 to 2 minutes, you're back to normal, and everything has been tested.

And while 32GB is no small file to keep, the image file is yet another backup that one can use to write over and over. Now that I have a butt load of storage, I'm thinking about archiving the major changes so I can drop way back if needed or if corruption slips in at some point. What can I say? I'm conservative. :D

Using Win32diskimager 1.0, I just imaged my working USB3 boot drive (32GB) to a file. The read was 7 minutes. The verification process of the file took another 7 minutes. Writes take much longer - it looks like it might be 1:30 or so. A verification adds another 7 more minutes to that. In any case, write times are not a factor if the active boot drive is plugged back in, immediately after the read. (I don't know where I got write times for the post above but with the server up and running, generally, I walk away.)

Since I made significant alterations to my ZFS pool before this update, meaning the 3rd copy master couldn't used in the interim, the first 15 to 16 minutes was a hard outage. With Pi-Hole down and to prevent this event from inconveniencing my lovely wife, I temporarily enabled DNS on my router. You could do that and, in your case, DHCP leases would remain active on your clients throughout (or at least until they're rebooted). In a 15 to 16 minute time frame, new DHCP leases shouldn't be an issue.

I'm now alive......having fallen down the stairs because my knee decided to give way I end up with a sprained wrist and a knee that looked like a soccer ball! when the doc came out he couldn't decide if it was fluid on the knee or a cartilage problem.....on top of that I develop a stomach viral infection.....so 5 days later after being bed bound the knee has gone down and the infection has gone and I have been able to eat and get things back working over the last couple of days. Knee and wrist are sore but I can walk and eat......the joys of getting older :)

Aha! that's my problem then....cos everything I have is USB 2.0 :( saying that I have had the opportunity today to test the wife's W10 laptop this has USB 3.0 ports (identical to mine except I run Mint)....so plugged in a USB 3.0 external hard drive, the drive light comes on green!! plug into my machine the drive is blue, confirming the drive has detected a USB 3.0 port......so investigating the wife's there appears to be no specific driver for her laptop for W10 other than the one that comes through Windows Update via Intel!
Checking MS and Clevo (manufacturer) the suggestion from MS is to use the W7 driver....and as usual W10 barfs at that being installed....wrong o/s!!
So back to square 1 get a USB 3.0 flash drive....create an image using the backup flash drive through dd then write that image to a USB 3.0 drive and test it....what a pia....added to that pi-hole is still as is, but it's working. :)

Man,, a trip down the stairs,, the HARD way. (Just tell me the wife or the number 1 son didn't "assist" you. :) ) A stomach viral infection too... That's insult to injury. Yeah, medical issues as we get older,, "bleep" !

On cloning- remember shutdown and coming up is about a 1.5 to 2 minute process.

If you do your process to accommodate uptime, your down time shouldn't take any longer than it takes to read and verify your working drive. (About 15 minutes.) After that, with the image file saved and verified, you come back up on your working drive and take as long as you like to write the second one. When it's ready, swapping them out is another 2 minute round trip. (Oh, sorry, the staircase was so soon...)

    With a 3rd drive, it's real easy.

That makes sense, what I've been doing doesn't....so getting a third drive is going to be beneficial and have left as the master.....first I do need to update pi-hole to get the graphs working at least, but so far the current set up has been working seamlessly. Once I get another drive I can then get an improved 'rota system' working to reduce the downtime to just a change over of usb's.

If pi-hole works, it works. A pretty console is not a big deal, IMO.

I updated the pi-hole "How To". Other than the need to wait a few minutes for the console to come up after a start/restart, there's no difference in setup.
It is a bit better in the graphs and stat's offered, but the real bonus the new version offers is DNSSEC (In, Settings, DNS). I'm using it with Google and Norton public servers. With DNS middle man attacks eliminated or at least reduced, it would have to be more secure. Of course, if something goes wrong, you can drop back. That's the beauty of maintaining a clone.

So what did the trip down the stairs and the stomach virus cost you? (If anything.) Is UK medical care really good? (I know that's a subjective question.) Liberals over here think it's great. Conservatives, think otherwise.

Installed new pi-hole....took minutes :) and have made the changes you recommended to the DNS option. Once this was done I shutdown and created an image then put the flash drive back and rebooted....didn't take long to create the image....now writing the image to the second flash drive so I have an up to date clone, then I'll swap them over.
The new pi-hole graphs are working, albeit the gui appears to be a little slower.

    Nothing :)

That's a difficult one to answer, NHS seems to be under pressure from emergencies and when that happens elective surgery gets cancelled (this is day surgery) this happened to me 4 years ago. I was due to have a gall bladder removal, 4 times it got cancelled. I ended up going in an a Saturday, apparently the NHS or rather the hospital gets fined if elective surgery is cancelled more than 3 times over a given period, hence the Saturday appointment.
Anyway, I got in get prepped taken into surgery, when I come round I'm told they can't operate I'm going to have to go to The Royal London for specialist surgery, turns out I had Mirizzi Syndrome Type IV very rare, bile was 'leaking' into my abdomen which if not corrected immediately could cause sepsis.
This is where the NHS balancing act falls over, by continually cancelling my elective surgery and not completing it within a certain time frame could have put my life at risk.....however, no one was to know that until the surgery started....'if' this was completed within two appointments I would have been in and out instead of spending three weeks at a hospital 60+ miles away.
The NHS needs a major overhaul and I believe problems started and have got worse since they placed hospitals within Trusts.....do I believe in the NHS, yes I do probably one of the greatest institutions set up in the UK, employees and employers contribute to it....and if it wasn't for the NHS my father would have dead in his 50's.
I have never understood why a country as big as the US has never adopted a similar system, to deny medical care based upon affordability to me is unfair....but then again I don't fully understand your system.
I do know the NHS will treat anyone, but you're not a UK/EU citizen you have to pay, but in some people can't afford too, and when they are discharged they return to their country leaving the NHS to chase payment.
The last time I was in the US I had run out of a drug I use daily (sometimes I have to double up on the dose) anyway went to a local Pharmacy, they had two types, one I could buy 'off the shelf' the other was prescription only.....the only difference was the prescription one was double the dose, 30mg compared to 15mg off the shelf...well that was a no brainer, but in the UK the drug is prescription only!
Whatever happened to Obamacare? it was in the news for a while then it just fizzled out, well at least over here anyway.

Had to change ethernet cable!! Well having replaced my switches some months back, everything appeared to be Ok at least I was now achieving 1Gb connections......but last night I copied a 2Gb ripped film from my laptop to OMV.....it was like watching paint dry!!

So logged into OMV and discovered that the NIC was only connecting at 100Mb ?( Ok that's not right, I assumed the switch was working correctly so the only other option was the cable....so out come the laptop bag full of patch cables, shutdown OMV, change the patch cable rebooted and it's all good again, copied the film back to the laptop...much better ^^

Well....the email, her name is spelt wrong so awaiting amendment, the laptop which is W7 they have just changed the user name of the previous user so all the previous user docs are still there, so in essence whilst the name is different (again spelt totally wrong) she doesn't get a clean empty data folder!

Mobile phone, phone charger is dead, fortunately I have one that works....but you can't get into the phone because the PIN hasn't been supplied!

I just bought a refurb with Win10 that didn't see my server, so I went about the process of making it happen. Other than the SMB additions to the registry and some settings, part of the HOW-TO is a sort of shotgun approach to insuring that the HOW-TO works in more scenarios, other than my own.

No...but the gremlins have been on the forum.....but after an email to her boss and hr, and reference to my father this IT and my father that with all the appropriate technical jargon, it's all been changed/updated by a tech closer to home and a sincere apology sent to daughter. Supposedly this has been passed further up the food chain as being totally unacceptable in respect of a new employee.

Did you give the HOW-TO Windows 10 to OMV a spin, or were you giving me the benefit of the doubt?

Actually yes I did, I thought I would try a clean install of W10, that was before I read your guide, but all I had to do was to enable discovery from file explorer when selecting network (which I had already done!!) then change the workgroup name to my own and that was it, it all worked.
The only issue I then had was resolving ip address to hostname for OMV....using the ip in chrome worked fine but it took a while for the hostname to work so.....hostnameofomvserver/ works, but unlike mint...hostnameofomvserver.local/
I never changed any of the smb settings and this is a clean reinstall of W10 x64...creators update which I think is 1709, so the networking was a lot quicker than previously, the only problem I had was installing a synaptic driver so that I could disable the PS/2 compatible mouse because I use a wireless one.....hate touchpads.

Sorry for the late reply but I've had trouble getting on the forum and when I did, and got something typed it crashed!!

The idea behind the Win10 HOW-TO was a shotgun approach in addressing as many potential issues as possible (Security / Sharing / Networking) , to cover as many variables as possible. The thing is, all of those "Microsoft Partners" (OEM's like Dell, Gateway, Compaq, etc.) are free to alter/customize Windows 10 when they install it, to suit their own purposes. Adding to that are users who don't do updates automatically or machines that are isolated the Internet. The entire scope of just those two factors results in a huge number of variations from the default installation baseline.

I bought a refurb (a great deal) with Win10 on it that didn't recognize my OMV server, so an opportunity presented itself. (At a guess, the Win10 question alone is about 5% of the questions asked on the forum.)
Using what I know and doing some research to fill in the wholes, I went about working on a process that would apply widely, that M$ would be less likely to screw up with a future security update. That was best done with the addition and setting of SMB Registry keys.

BTW: Those SMB settings already exist in Win installs and can be "fetched" with a "Get" command and changed - I believe - with "Set" commands. Adding them as keys to the Registry merely exposes them to the light of day for easier checks and alterations, while protecting them (somewhat) from M$ alteration.

You might want to consider doing all of the steps to speed up operations and prevent MS interference. (Your call.) The IP address versus serverhostname issue you mentioned is permanently taken care of with the host file addition. You'd never have that issue again and response time is the fastest possible - static local DNS for a single host - <1ms
On the other hand, if something disappears or issues crop up after an update, it can be fixed.

I'll have a look at that today, your guide it more in depth than what I would normally do. The only reason I tried W10 again was 1709 can be downloaded and because the original is digitally signed the new clean install was automatically activated, I must admit this is a lot better, smoother than the previous version. The only problem I had was disabling the touchpad, well trying to find and install drivers so I could disable it, but we got there :) The only option I had to search for was adding a second monitor, now you use Win + P to bring up the options but so far it's what it should have been when W10 became available.....nothing new on that front.

:D:D:D:D:D this made me laugh, but fortunately the threat of foreclosure is a distant memory, no more mortgage

The only problem I have is HMRC (IRS) they have sent me another letter informing me I have not sent in a self assessment form and I shall face a fine, they tried this 3 years ago and when I called them up I got told 'you have filled in form blah blah' to which I replied 'does that form have my signature on it'.......silence. Having been self employed and filed self assessment returns I also informed them when I went back to employed status which in the UK does not require me to fill in a self assessment form.

    - When I got the "new refurb", my first instinct was to dump Win10 in favor of Linux Mint. But, after loading Classic Shell to get Win7 style menu's (I hate the tiled desktop), Win10 is proving to be useful for the forum. While Win10 is compromised, security wise, I found that Pi-Hole is mitigating the problem. Other than updates, Pi-hole is blocking M$ servers.

    - I downloaded the new CE update and Pi-Hole is fine. (But I have yet to reboot.) Unless it goes sour again, I'm not touching it. Full version upgrades, more frequent than 6 months at a time, give me a rash. :)

    - That thing with HMRC sort of reminds me of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Common sense be damned - "It's all about the process and bureaucracy!" (Nothing else matters.) I'm of the belief that Government should be small and anemically funded. Those circumstances tend to keep senseless bureaucracy out of the individual's affairs.

    - On the mortgage - it's a distant memory for us as well. We have zero debt, no payments of any kind, with the exceptions of the usual cost of living items. (Electric, groceries, etc.) Those who think they can go into retirement, with debt, amaze me. If one can't neutralize all debt before retiring AND have some sort of nest egg to cover emergencies, retirement is not possible even with a reliable annuity.

    - On your snow and low temps: A few weeks back, the US finally broke out of a weeks long deep freeze. (It was over a month long.) I have a fire place insert type wood stove that generates about 55K BTU when it's burning up to temp. That's more than enough to heat our house but, during this period, it was a struggle to keep up. While I hated to let it happen, on occasion, I had to let our furnace make up the difference. (My fuel oil bill, for the last two years, was $35 USD. I like to keep it that way. :D )

This is why I laugh about global warming. I thoroughly researched it and the entire concept is BS. In accordance with past patterns, in geological time, the planet could get a full 7 degrees hotter and still be within past averages. While polluting up the atmosphere is a bad idea, we all have to breathe, global warming is nothing more than the scientific community crying "wolf" and extending their collective hands for more funding. Here's a an accurate caricature of the BS they've been spouting for decades.

Never heard of Classic Shell but found it doing a search, TBH I remove all tiles as I pin most of the software I use on the taskbar.....but I have found one thing chrome does not behave the same on W10 as it does on Linux ?( in that respect Edge seems to take over.....you tube has a habit of buffering on chrome but not on edge and the local radio via the bbc using the built in radio player via the bbc site buffers on chrome and doesn't play but on edge it's flawless, and I've been through all the usual settings for chrome to check if they are disabled/enabled.
I can also get back to using RDP....remmina on Linux is Ok but I prefer RDP it's much cleaner, and I can use WinSCP rather than Filezilla, again that's personal choice.

What's this with 1709? Is it a freebie?

It's the Creator update it's downloadable as an .iso x86 or x64 and there a number of versions of W10 to choice from once the install starts, from Home to PRO etc.
When I had 10 previously I had constant trouble with updates failing to install particularly the Creator update that's why I gave up on it. I dug out my old AMD/Nvidia laptop, used another drive and installed 1709.....no problem, and that laptop did not like any Linux distro due the Nvidia card...it would install, then 5 minutes of use the screen would start flickering constantly.

    • Offizieller Beitrag

As it seems, 1709 is already applied to the refurb's Win10 install.

Regarding your Laptop; I had video troubles on a Core Duo client (flickering, slowing to a crawl, an actual crash, and other weirdness) with Linux Mint 18, KDE version. To my amazement, the XFCE edition worked fine. So,, the issue might not be with the stand-in for the Nvidia proprietary driver. It just might be the desktop. (Maybe this is one of those long shot "things", but I thought it worth mentioning.)
