New OMV3 installation - strange Email notifications

  • Hello,

After using OMV2 for a long time without any problems i have changed to OMV3 (new installation, no update).
Most functions of the new installation seem to work ok including addons, but i get strange EMail-Notifications like:

    Von: Cron Daemon <mymailadress@xxx.com>
    An: mymailadress@xxx.com
    Betreff: [Server.fritz.box] Cron <root@Server> test -x /etc/init.d/anacron && /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d anacron start >/dev/null
    Datum: Tue, 25 Jul 2017 07:30:01 +0200 (CEST)

invoke-rc.d: policy-rc.d denied execution of start.

    and:

    Von: Anacron <mymailadress@xxx.com>
    An: mymailadress@xxx.com
Betreff: [Server.fritz.box] Anacron job 'cron.daily' on Server
    Datum: Tue, 25 Jul 2017 10:15:09 +0200 (CEST)

    /etc/cron.daily/logrotate:
    error: error running shared postrotate script for '/var/log/mysql.log /var/log/mysql/mysql.log /var/log/mysql/mysql-slow.log /var/log/mysql/error.log '
invoke-rc.d: action rotate is unknown, but proceeding anyway.
invoke-rc.d: policy-rc.d denied execution of rotate.
    run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/logrotate exited with return code 1

Can anybody tell me, what is wrong with my new installation, please.

Can not reproduce this behavior on a fresh 3.0.82 ISO installation. The command policy-rc.d is not available.

i have installed from 3.0.79 ISO, because this was the suggested image at time of installation (Looking for the latest version? ...)
and this command (policy-rc.d) is in /usr/sbin on my new system.
What am i supposed to do?

  • beyond my understanding...

I just googled for 'invoke-rc.d: policy-rc.d denied execution of start' site:openmediavault.org and ended up here. And since @votdev fixed an issue related to such init mechanism recently it was just a thought that it might be related. Also since this doesn't happen with a 'clean' OMV installation installing your add-ons one after the other (of course starting with the one you already reference above -- mysql) and reporting back would help to nail the problem down.

  • Beside the strange Email-Notifications mentioned above there where also some other problems with my OMV3 installation, also with respect to policy-rc.d preventing services to start.
So i decided to reinstall from scratch using 3.0.82 ISO (instead of 3.0.79 ISO before).
I installed with the same configuration options (especially all addons used in the old installation) as before.

In the new installation all problems are solved, especially there is no binary named policy-rc.d in /usr/sbin.

So i had to spend some more time of my life X( , but much less compared to my first attempt :D .

  • I had the exact same behaviour using openmediavault_3.0.86-amd64.iso standalone installation from USB to USB. I had also another issue related to service management. Don't know what went wrong there. It's hard to imagine that an addon is responsible for that.

As re-installing is not an actual solution someone with the same problem could do two things:

    1) Edit /usr/sbin/policy-rc.d and change value "101" to "0".
    OR
    2) Delete /usr/sbin/policy-rc.d
