Mass Re-assignment of File Permissions

  • Hey,
    This is not specifically an OpenMediaVault query - just wondering if anyone got any thoughts ..
    I have an alias in my .bash_aliases file that reads as follows ..

    Code
    alias ch775='cd /srv/dev-disk-by-label-DATA/share && chown -R root:users /srv/dev-disk-by-label-DATA/share/tv && chmod -R 775 /srv/dev-disk-by-label-DATA/share/tv'

    Perhaps I've missed something fundamental, but I so far have failed to hook all the different tools up (nzbget, sonarr, couchpotato etc) without a mish-mash of different users, groups, owners, permissions & whatnot.

    I was wondering if what I've done here above is in any way bad practice? Does anyone have an opinion if chaining all those commands together & setting them loose over & over again on a 4TB hard drive is in anyway a bad idea?

    Thanking you in advance for any thoughts.

    I'm really pleased with how this OMV has worked out for me, incidently - it's a great project! :thumbup:

    (I'm on version 3.0.85 at this time, if that makes any difference)
