future of btrfs or already looking at bcachefs?

  • Hi,

I came across this article about openzfs and btfrs

    https://www.ixsystems.com/blog/open-zfs-vs-btrfs/

Which points to Redhat who has deprecated btrfs ???

    Btrfs has been deprecated

The Btrfs file system has been in Technology Preview state since the initial release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. Red Hat will not be moving Btrfs to a fully supported feature and it will be removed in a future major release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
The Btrfs file system did receive numerous updates from the upstream in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4 and will remain available in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 series. However, this is the last planned update to this feature.

    See: https://access.redhat.com/docu…ecated_Functionality.html

This is of course not good news when a big player like RedHat does this, what will this mean for the future of this filesystem?
Maybe in the future OVM will work with http://bcachefs.org/

Its interesting to follow the filesystems and what is best to use, myself i have been using zfs professionally since Sun created it and its still my favourite filesystems, would like to see NAS software like OMV making it easier from install to use other filesystems then to first having to install plugins.

btrfs isn't deprecated in the kernel. Redhat just doesn't want to support it. Debian and all other distros not based on redhat haven't deprecated it from what I have seen.
