disable mdadm when no raid used

My system still however wants to load mdadm after every restart.

    Can it be disabled?

It shouldn't do anything if you don't have a raid array. You can't remove the mdadm package because the openmediavault package itself depends on it.

I only use single disks backed up with rsync after a very bad raid experience.

It's good that you learned the lesson, albeit the hard way. (My regrets for that.)

Beyond the immediate problems presented by a complete array failure, RAID even removes most avenues for data recovery from crashed hard drives. If the array fails, in many cases, it's a complete loss. Noting that many do not backup, I'd argue that RAID is NOT the friend of the home or small business user.
