some advices for a new NAS (update: feedback)

  • Hi everyone!
I currently have a NAS and plane to operate some big changes.
I run with a RAID 5 of 3*3TB and I'd like to add 3*4TB but I need first to change everything (my current NAS was mainly built upon an old PC, hot and far to be quiet).
This was what I was planning:

    - case: Fractal Design Node 304
    - alim: Be Quiet Pure Power 10 CM - 700W (I have a good price, cheaper than 500W, but will it fit in the case?)
    - RAM: I hesitate between 4 or 8 with my current setup then double it when I buy the 3*4TB (so 8 or 16 in a near future)?
But I don't know which motherboard / CPU to choose. It's mainly for Samba / ftp file sharing, and maybe some plugins like Transmission, Plex, Owncloud and maybe some backup tools.
Is it possible to find something around 120/150€ (MB + CPU) ?
I was also wondering if we can find some MB with 6 sata or will I have to use a PCIe card?

    thanks in advance!

  • Hi, just to give you a little feedback on my config.
    here it is:

    - motherboard: ASROCK H270M-ITX/ac (with 6 sata port)
    - CPU: Pentium G4400
    - rad CPU: BeQuiet Pure Rock Slim
    - RAM: Ballistix BLS8G4D240FSC Sport LT 8Go DDR4
    - Power: BeQuiet Pure Power 700W (semi-modular)
    - HDD: Raid5 with 3xWD red 3TB and Raid5 with 3xIronWolf red 3TB
    - SDD for OMV: Transcend SSD 32Go (plugged on usb3)
    - Case: Fractal Design Node 304

I had it for around 400€ (without HDDs)

I'm using this for around 1 month and everything works perfectly ( Transmission, Plex, SMB/sFTP/Webdav, ExpressVPN etc. but I do no VM). It is also pretty quiet (I only hear the HDDs), all fans running to minimum and temps are 30° average for CPU and 34° for HHDs.

  • This configuration is nearly perfect!
    Just 2 points:
    1) Right now there is ner pentiun g4560 that is better than out g4400
    2) there is no point on buying a 700W PSU, remaining with bequit psu I suggest: Pure Power 10 300/350W or Straight Power 10 400W. Every PSU works at it's best between 20 and 70% load, buying a 700W for a thing like that is useless

    hi there, it is possible,

    gigabyte b250m-ds3h 65€
    Pentium G4560 60€

i don't know were are you from, but i assume my country is one of the most expensives in europe, so i reckon you will find same product for the same price or even less, by the way i'm from Portugal

your needs are exactly the same needs i have

    my rig

    - CPU: Pentium G4560
    - Motherboard: gigabyte b250m-ds3h (with 6 sata port)
    - Cooler: DeepCool GAMMAXX 300 (not essential, the default is more than enough, but i want complete silence)
    - RAM: Ballistix BLS4G4D240FSE DDR4 2400 2X 4GB
    - Power: Kolink Core 500W 80+ KL-C500
    - Flash OMV: SanDisk ULTRA FIT CZ43 16GB (plugged on usb3)

the case i had one laying around so i use that one, my system on load exalts like 22 Decibels in idle 17

250€ was what i had paid for this
