Hi there,
I liked to shortly introduce my new "mediaserver":
It's based on the tutorial for the "NAS Basic 3.0" provided by the "technikaffe" homepage with slight modifications:
MOBO: | Asrock J3455-ITX (with Apollo Lake Celeron CPU) |
RAM: | 2x4GB Kit Crucial DDR3 1866 (instead of the often recommended 2x 4GB Kingston DDR3L-1600) |
SYSTEM-SSD: | 32GB Transcend internal SATA III SSD |
Data - HDD | 2x 2GB WD red |
POWERSUPPLY: | PicoPSU-80 with 60W Leicke power brick |
CASE: | Itx storage case "INTER-TECH IPC SC-4004" with 4x 3,5" (or 2,5") drive bays (with original case fan switched for a more silent "Yate Loon D12SL-12") |
OS: | openmediavault 4.0.11-1 (Arrakis) |
MEDIASERVER: | emby 3.2.36.0 |
Starting point was the breakdown of my old NAS (Netgear Stora). While my Data drives fortunatelly survived unharmed,
I wanted to add a little extra comfort to media handling which I formerly realized in a minimalistic fashion through "mini-dlna" + Bubble UPnP".
Could have been done by a more powerfull NAS too. Like it a lot better this way!
...took me a long time to decide for the right or let's say "most easy to handle software configuration of my like":
OMV + Kodi, OMV + Kodi on Debian9.0, Kodi in a container ? ... and so on ... until emby crossed my way!
Although I didn't totally give up on Kodi, the route I finally took seemed to me as far the easiest to reach my specific goals:
1.Installing OMV from a stick
2.setting up my Data drives from my Stora
3.setting up samba-shares
4.installing and configuring emby
5.installing emby-app on my Smartphone, serving as a control point for managing and streaming content to various clients within my appartment.
6.Done!
Next steps include:
- setting up a reasonable power-saving scheme (disk-power-management, autoshutdown, WOL)
- take care about data security (--> I have an additional USB-Drive for backups, but feel the need to optimize my backup strategies)
- enjoying improved media experience through more powerfull media management
