Errors were encountered while processing: /var/cache/apt/archives/python-samba

  • Logging in to PuTTY there was a remark to run apt-get update. This gave the error below. Do I need to worry?

    Code
    Errors were encountered while processing:
     /var/cache/apt/archives/python-samba_2%3a4.2.14+dfsg-0+deb8u9_armhf.deb
    E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I tried a few Google suggestions (below) but none removed the error:

Running from SD card? Maybe it got corrupted already (all SD cards die, just a question of time). I would do a

    Code
    dpkg --verify

first, maybe it's time for a new card and restoring last backup (to interpret the results use the forum search with 'dpkg verify')

  • Thanks for the reply. Interestingly the SD card is only about 3 months old so I'd be surprised if it were wearing out already.

I ran dpkg --verify. I don't know how to interpret the results (given below) - I'm guessing that since it didn't post any errors that things are ok?

No, massive data corruption for whatever reasons or an update that has been interrupted in between. There's stuff corrupted below /sbin/ und /usr/lib/ and I doubt you'll get this fixed.

I would start from scratch and follow closely the remarks how to deal with SD cards (quoting the announcement thread)

    • For satisfying results burn it only with Etcher (no need to decompress, Etcher will verify burning process and save you from some common SD card troubles). It's strongly recommended to always test your SD card with either F3 or H2testw first to check for counterfeit/broken cards.

In case you followed already these advises then it's still possible that your SD card died. SD card crappiness is the main reason why I often think about stopping to work with single board computers that lack onboard storage (and this part of the documentation of the other project I contribute too is the most important one saving us from all those useless support hassles that are only related to SD cards failing)

  • OK, and thanks for the confirmation that I need not worry. The comments on checking the card are interesting.

All previous installations have used Win32DiskImager. When I have time after Christmas I'll look at rebuilding.
