Has anyone got OMV running on a Alfawise X5 Mini PC Intel Atom X5-Z8350 2GB DDR3 (or similar)?
These are currently on sale for 30GBP and look like they might be suitable for a simple setup.
Cheers,
Llion

I don't see anything that would make me think OMV would not work ok on it.
Thanks. I might give it a try then. It's the same price as a RPi (cheaper when you factor in the extras you need) and it has USB3 and gigabit ethernet.
Hi
No,please look here

He isn't buying an RPi. What is the link for?

Running Linux can be challenging on a lot of those Mini PC from 2016 and 2017. Some information and potential fixes/workarounds (like rEFInd): http://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com

I have two Braswell devices running Debian that weren't a problem. So, I didn't think this box would be that difficult. Do they not have legacy boot mode?
Do they not have legacy boot mode?
No idea. I don't follow this closely but read a lot about Linux problems starting with Cherry Trail over at this blog: https://www.cnx-software.com (Jean-Luc reviewed even x86 devices where he got Linux running, just to be informed later by readers that subsequent product updates made booting Linux impossible -- which I find quite hard to believe but there seems to be evidence. My personal learning was to do some research first if I ever want to buy a mini PC -- but I've here both a Minnowboard Max and an UP board and not even tried to boot them once )
Well i missed the deal, but maybe that's a good thing. I've since seen some other comments about issues with Linux and cherrytrail. Will try and look into it some more.
Any suggestions for a suitable mini pc or something similar that's cheap I could use to run OMV?
suitable mini pc or something similar
Thanks for the link, very useful.
If, rather than getting low energy, the main things I was looking to address was
- low cost
- include usb3
- include gigabit ethernet
Would I be correct in saying that from that list the Odroid would be my best option?

ODROID or ROCK64. Please keep in mind that there will be an ODROID HC2 available shortly before Christmas just like HC1 but for one 3.5" HDD (so larger and 12V DC-IN needed)
Almost forgot: ROCK64 folks will also come up with something similar to HC1 next time. Fully software compatible to ROCK64 but with a JMS578 onboard and metal enclosure acting as heatsink. AFAIK if this thing sells they're also thinking about a later 3.5" variant.

Too bad the 3.5" variant won't be available right away. I have no interest in the 2.5" version. Guess I will go with the odroid-HC2 when it is available.
I know they won't be as energy efficient but is there any similar x86 hardware around for me to compare with?
My understanding is that the atom processors have pretty much been killed off.

Check out the udoo x86. I have one and it uses comparable energy to an Odroid xu4.
I'm looking for other use cases a low cost x86 board for about 70 €,
have found this:
https://up-shop.org/4-up-boards
the best price there is $89 for an atom x5-Z8350 CPU,16GB eMMC, 1GB RAM board
https://up-shop.org/up-boards/…gb-16-gb-emmc-memory.html
I'm more interestet in an apollo lake board like up2 square on this site:
https://up-shop.org/4-up-board…board_version-up2_squared
somewere in the www i have read that there will be also a cheaper board

Well, IMO it depends on how many disks you want to connect to your OMV box at the same time. At least here in DE we get new stuff like 'HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8, Celeron G1610T, 4GB RAM' for ~200€ (or older N54L used with disks for the same price) so there's not that much need to think about any alternatives if disks should spin all the time (otherwise idle consumption of ~2W with an ARM thingie vs. a lot more can make a real difference).
Thanks for all the advice, very helpful and has given me a starting point. Unfortunately Christmas is getting in the way at the moment, so I'll have to get back to this another time. I might have a few follow up questions then.
Cheers
I just recently purchased N54L. On what drive would you recommend to put OMV? - HDD, SSD, OR USB flash?
