adding a new hard drive to an existing encrypted pool

  • Hi,

is the above possible? I have 1 hard drive already in a volume and it is encrypted with LUKS. I would like to add more hard drives to the same pool (so expanding the storage), but I also would like them to be encrypted.

    is this possible?

    What kind of "pool"?

Is LVM on top of LUKS or LUKS on top of LVM?

If you have LVM on top of LUKS, create another LUKS encrypted drive and add it to the volume group.

If you went the other way, you would add a drive to the volume group and then you would need to resize the LUKS device from the command line.

  • Honestly... i'm not sure. I did it from the GUI. I've attached an image (sdc drive is the one I want to add more drives to).

Does that help? Looks like LUKS on LVM. Is there a guide where I can follow to add more drives?

It actually looks like LVM on LUKS which is good. That means you created the LUKS device first.

No because most people don't use LVM on top of non-redundant drives - if a drive fails, you lose everything. But if you still want to go down that path, what I gave you in my previous post should help. Not looking at the lvm plugin but this is how you would do it from the command line:

    • Create another LUKS device from another device.
    • Add that device as a new PV (physical volume)
    • Add the new PV to the existing VG (volume group)
    • Resize the filesystem on the LV (logical volume) in the filesystems tab
