need help to build nas from my actual desktop with minimal hardware investment and continue to use windows 10 as VM in same time

  • hello

I need some advise before going to my project:

    my configuration:
    mother board ASUS H170 PRO GAMING - LGA1151 - H170 , non ECC compatible
CPU Intel Skylake Processeur Core i5-6500 / 3.2 GHz
    RAM DDR4 Kingston HyperX Fury Black 2 x 8 Go 2133 MHz
    Corsair RMx Series RM550x
    GC NVIDIA 950GTX
    drives :
    1 x SSD
    3 x 1To (1x 3.5" - 2 x 2.5")
    1 x 2To - 3.5"
    1 x 500Go - 3.5"
all drives are actually formetted in NTFS with some data

    main goal:
I wish get a NAS for punctualstreamin video (for my smatphone outside of my home) + torrent client==> so I need remote control + WOL (I mean WOW of course)
I still need use windows 10 for me and my little wife (pack office + play occasionally to starcraft 2 or heroes of storm)

I don't want redondancy or raid or ZFS (anyway ZFS need ECC RAM and my MB are not ECC compatible)

is it good if I intend to install OMV on my configuration for NAS server and then install windows 10 as virtual machine + VGA pass through ???
If yes what is the best configuration for installing OMV ? (wich drive ? the one with 500Go?) then wich drive for my VM ?
should I change all drive by another system drive?

    thanks for your futur response

  • Hello donh

Thanks for your reply proxmox seem interresting but I didn't find free support or documentation about it even if the software is seems free.
    is there any equivalent freeware?
I heard about virtual box or KVM can it work with it?

anyway you advise to install OMV in a VM, does mean installing windows as OS host? Iam right?

sorry for asking so many accurate point, but my english is not very good I want be sure to understand all well.

Proxmox is free. You can pay for support as well but you don't have to. VMware has a free version of ESXi too.

    omv 7.0.4-2 sandworm | 64 bit | 6.5 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 7.0 | kvm 7.0.10 | compose 7.1.2 | k8s 7.0-6 | cputemp 7.0 | mergerfs 7.0.3

omv-extras.org plugins source code and issue tracker - github

Please try ctrl-shift-R and read this before posting a question.

Please put your OMV system details in your signature.
Please don't PM for support... Too many PMs!

There is plenty of free support, forums and irc. It's debian based. I have used it for a few years and not actually needed it. Your mileage may very. Most problems were self inflicted and fixed by my aux brain google. The free version is a little more cutting edge than their paid version. The free version is full featured, not limited. The free version has a nag screen when you log in to proxmox and when you check for updates, just dismiss it and move on.

It should run more than what you have stated above with ease. Unless you are a die hard gamer. But then you would probably have better hardware anyway, LOL.

I think esxi has a reduced function free version. There is always virtual box too. There are many other options out there.

  • hello all

I'm still tring to VM windows 10.

I succesfull install proxmox V5 and virtualize windows 10 with the help of a tutorial, but I can't add a physical drive to my windows 10 and enable GPU passthrough.

    Anyone did already this before?

If think that I'll expect to by a NAS synology....

  • hello,

Can I add the virtual disk from Proxmox interface or from my WM?
In fact in m'y node I have only a local disk for my iso with a LVM for my VM on my SSD.
I wish add my other physical drive.
