Hi everyone!
This is only partially OMV related, because it sounds like a hardware problem. However, I am trying to figure out where the problem lies (hard disks or fan) and I would need some help because I never had a case like this before.
I was out for holidays and the only colleague in the office over the holidays reported that the server made strange noises. First she said it was the cable modem, which I doubted and then they said that when they switched off the server the sound was gone...
Now that I am back I switched the server back on and after a while the "strange noise" reappeared. However, it is difficult to identify the source within the server. I think it is the fan, but who knows. I might also be one of the 4 HDDs in the HP Microserver.
I checked the SMART report and the system disk got a red dot, because it has a few damaged sectors. So I will probably have to change this for a new disk. But how do I determine what makes the noise? I can't just unmount the disks one by one, because I would have to destroy the shared folders.
Is there anywhere in the reports to check problems with the disk or the fan?
I opened the server and it is quite dusty, so I will clean it a bit. Anything else I can do?
What would you do in this moment? Make a backup of the installation and install it on another disk? Any tips on how to proceed there?
If it is really the system disk, I might upgrade to the newest version. Or would you first go for the current version and then upgrade? Would there be a problem with the raid and backup disks if I create a new installation from scratch? I guess it probably wouldn't recognize the shared folders, right?
Here an audio of the strange noise. Maybe someone can exclude disks as possible cause due to the sound. I don't know what sound disks make that are dying...
It's a wav file, only a few seconds. Can be played directly in the browser, no need to download.

Thanks in advance for any help and tips!
