OMV 3 with debian 8.1 upgrade to OMV 4?

    • Offizieller Beitrag

I would like to upgrade to OMV 4 but also to Debian 9.2.

This is mandatory. OMV 4.x requires Debian 9.x.

Does upgrading OMV 3 to 4 also upgrade my debian system?

    Yes

If not: how can I back up all my OMV database and settings?

While you can backup the /etc/openmediavault/config.xml, there is no way to restore it. You should clone your entire OS drive with something like clonezilla.

I ask because of this installation / upgrade guide:

To upgrade, you don't need a guide. Just backup your system and then execute omv-release-upgrade. That's it.

    omv 7.0.5-1 sandworm | 64 bit | 6.5 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 7.0 | kvm 7.0.11 | compose 7.1.3 | k8s 7.1.0-3 | cputemp 7.0 | mergerfs 7.0.3

omv-extras.org plugins source code and issue tracker - github - changelogs

  • Unfortunately my OS drive has 80 GB and my second "backup OS drive" has 160 GB.
Otherwise I don't have any drive where I can backup to.

    I will just try omv-release-upgrade.
Let's hope Plex Media Server will survive.

Don't you have a data drive? clonezilla also backs up to a few files and it only backs up used sectors. So, the backup should be considerably smaller than 80GB (unless your OS drive is filled.

  • My system OS drive uses 2,02 GB currently.

Currently I have 1x 2 TB drive, 1x 1 TB and 1x 160 GB drive installed. All three will be replaced soon by 3x 3 TB WD Red.
First 1, the 2 others later because they are kind of expensive.

Plex uses already a single folder on my data drive as backup database or main database, not sure. So this will not be a problem.

The backup will be smaller than that.

  • I'm not quite sure what option to use from clonezille.

It asks me "works with images of disk or partitions"
    or
"works from disk to disk or partition to partition".

    Edit
    I'm to stupid using clonezilla.
It asks me the thing above, I choose the first option. Then it asks me to choose local_dev, ssh_server, samba etc and I choose local_dev.
Then it tells me to put in my usb drive and press enter. After that it displays me my usb drive.

At the end it wants to backup ALL my connected disks to my tiny usb drive instead of my os drive.

<screenshots removed. I will just run the upgrade without backing up anything>

I don't remember the exact words and I don't read German but you want to save your OS disk to an image. I don't know what option you picked to save all of the disks but you should only select the OS disk. local-dev is correct though.

  • I will write it down

    $ clonezilla
    - device image
    -- local_dev
(putting in USB stick and pressing enter)

clonezilla now wants to mount /home/partimag. In this list it only shows me my usb stick. I choose it.
Now it asks me to choose a folder on this stick. I choose root ( / ).

Now back on my normal putty console it displays me all my connected disks and how much they are full.
    I press enter.

Clonezilla asks me to choose between beginner or expert mode. I choose beginner.
    Now savedisk (disk as image).
I type in an image name.

Now it complains about the disk is mounted. I didn't mount it myself! Unmounting via OMV gui throws an error.

Ok got it. Now it wants me to choose my "original" disk. Maybe it means "source disk" ?
It only shows me my usb drive (sdg).

Stupid question: do I need to shutdown my system? I am using clonezilla on my running system via putty.

do I need to shutdown my system? I am using clonezilla on my running system via putty.

Yes. Clonezilla needs the disk unmounted and definitely not in use. So, you need to boot clonezilla from a usb stick or install it with omv-extras which will give you a grub entry to boot from an iso image in your /boot directory.

    Good to hear.
