Can't Connect to shares in Windows

  • Hi guys!
I have a new installation and I just can't get connected to my shares...
I have used tekkb's how to for a long time without problems....
    I have added shared folders...
    I have added user...
I have added smb/cifs shares as usual....
BUT Windows just will not connect....
It asks for name and password and just spits it out again...
I have checked, checked and checked....no mistakes....
    What do I do?

  • I have since upgraded to omv and it doesn't work again.....so something doesn't work in omv 4
Even doing an upgrade and I still get the popup in Windows because it doesn't recognised the saved login information in Windows....
I have tried everything I can think of until I am just fedup...

I have now tried a clean installation and an upgrade and getting access to shares even if everything looks ok in samba....doesn't work...I can't be the only one having this problem....

So no OMV 4 until someone can say what gives...

    bookie56

  • Well, it isn't a samba problem...everything in samba checks out...Everything on the list checks out.....
Funny....I have reverted to an older version and it works out of the box.....so please tell me what is different in omv 4.1.3?

    bookie56

NT1 is discontinued, so you need to be sure to use SMB3 and not NT1

[How-TO] Samba for simple file sharing and fixes to common problems.

  • I should point out I am using Windows 7 Ultimate to access my OMV machines...all this talk of Windows 10 crap...and people forget that not all of us believe in the latest crap from Microsoft..or Microsoft as a company...
So my problems are Samba related to OMV 4.1.3....is samba too old in OMV 4.1.3?
If that is the case then why?

You mean too new??? Windows 7 isn't really changing anymore. Samba is 4.5.x on OMV 4.x and 4.2.x on OMV 3.x are both more than new enough to work with Windows 7. I maintain plenty of Win7 and 10 boxes that have no problem working with OMV 3.x and 4.x.

If that is the case then why?

OMV doesn't determine which version of samba is used. It uses whatever version Debian uses.

Are you using any extra options that might be causing the problems? Maybe the samba passwords and linux passwords are out of sync?? Try changing a user's password or creating a new user.

  • Hi ryecoaaron :)
I have tried everything I can think of...all my other OMV machines have OMV 3 this is the only machine with 4 at the moment
I have no problems from any other machine and I haven't reduced security like this one to get it working...
Whne I first try to add my name password it shows up like the first pic and then it shows as the second when it doesn't connect....?

And that is as far as I get...I have changed the samba password and user password...but nada...

Are the windows machines on a domain or part of a workgroup?

Did you set privileges on the shared folder? Can you post your smb.conf? cat /etc/samba/smb.conf

  • Yes I have added privileges on the shared folder...

I have now stopped public guest access and no login again...so everything seems to be down to password problems in outerspace :)

I don't see anything wrong with that. What is the output of:

    ls -al /srv/dev-disk-by-id-md-name-Simson-0/Media1

  • Hi again!
Don't be put off by the change in user....
I have installed the 4.1.3 to a usb flash drive (with flash memory plugin) for testing to see if we can fix this....

    Code
    root@Simson:~# ls -al /srv/dev-disk-by-id-md-name-Simson-0/Media1
    totalt 16
    drwxrwsrwx+ 1 Martyn users 8 apr 18 21:35 .
    drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 12 apr 18 10:22 ..
    drwxrwsr-x+ 1 Martyn users 0 apr 18 21:35 test
    root@Simson:~#

I put a directory in Media1 called "test" from my old installation....which works...
