If you system is using an SD card, I am assuming it is an arm system? The easiest way to make an image is use win32diskimager (or dd) to make an image of the entire card. The newest version of the backup plugin can also do this but it is difficult to restore on an arm system.

Yes although I would use etcher.io to restore if needed.

It is quite a bit of writes but emmc usually has higher write limits than usb sticks and sd cards.
And how do I know if the card is okay?
If smartctl works on it, then you would see info. If not, I don't know.
