First NAS Build.Need SAS conrtoller Advice

  • Hello Everyone!
Recently i made a NAS Server for my personal usage and i am using it for nearly 6 months without any problem so far.
My main reason to use this to store my family photos and bushiness drawings-office files such as AutoCAD and excel files which are important.

Now i want to upgrade my server HDD capacity so i decided to buy a new SAS controller because my motherboard only have 4 sata ports (2 SATAII 2 SATAIII) which is limiting me to add more disks.

I don't plan to make raid or something in near future. But later maybe i will make raid mirroring.

    Here is my existing setup:

Asus P9D-I Mini ITX Server Motherboard
    Xeon E3 1220L v3 1.1 Ghz Processor
Kingston KTD-PE316ES 4 GB of ECC ram
    DC 12V 160W 24PIN Pico ATX Psu
2 of 2TB Seagate Disk (BTRFS File System) and 1 of Toshiba (EXT4 File System) 250 GB boot disk

So I want to buy a LSI SAS (9211-4i) Card and plug it to PCI slot and profit but i want to ask following questions:

Is it right way to add sata ports to add this motherboard?
Adding by this card should i worried about data corruption or something?
Is OMV 3.x supported by this card?
It seems this card supports IT and IR modes, which one should i use? What are them?
If it is ok to use this card may i use this pci extender?I want to made my setup compact.
    Motherboard have x16 PCI-e slot.This card is x4 PCI-e, Can i use x4 on a x16 slot?

Also I have open to any suggestions.

If i made a mistake while writing this post, please forgive me.English is not my native language.

    Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

  • Since you didn't get a reply on this yet, thought I'd share what I can:

This is a popular way, to do it. There are others, but this should work well.

These are pretty reliable cards, so shouldn't be a concern. If you get one without a provided Mini-SAS cable, make sure to get a good quality one.

Is OMV 3.x supported by this card?

Yes. Specifically, OMV's underlying Debian Linux provides the driver support for this card. This family of LSI cards has been supported in Linux for a long time, so the drivers are very stable.

For your use case, use IT mode. IR is for RAID. IT is "passthrough" mode, which will allow you to access each drive individually in much the same manner as your drives that are connected to the motherboard.

I've not used one of these, so I don't know.
