Webmail with local backup

  • Hy there,

first big thanks to the whole omv Team, great work ! I use omv for 3 years now.

Basicly im looking for a Thunderbird / Outlook like Web App on my server.
I tryed some Mailserver HowTos and other (like mailpile, horde webmail). But i failed on the correct configuration for my needs, most how tos aim for soho with a tld and different user accounts.
And mailpile had problems connecting to my Mail Accounts (randomly one of them had connection problems), and after a few days it stopped fetching mails. Horde Webmail seem to miss a local webserver...

I have 4-5 Mail Accounts (gmx, yahoo, gmail ...) and i use Thunderbird with POP3 / SMTP on my Dekstop. Thunderbird mark mails as read on Mail Account, and read mails are deletet from this Mailservers after 30days.
At home this works fine, but sometimes i need to read old mails (older than 30days), when iam on the road.

VPN is already in use, so i think a local mail server or something like that in a VM should do this (?) Or does somebody know something better?

It should fetch/send Mails from different Mail Servers like yahoo or gmail (Pop3/smtp maybe imap?), store them local and make them searchable via webbrowser.

Sry for the bad english, but i hope others have same needs or even already a solution.

  • This could be a solution for this problem.
But i dont want google to know ALL my mail or any other.

I have a NAS with omv so i can host that part on my own.

The question ist what i need to accomplish that, a local Mail Client with web based gui. (Like Mailpile)
Or the whole Mailserver, MTA, Webmail, Spamfilter System, where im lost in configuration.

Is there realy no one who have similar problems? Or a interesting link to share?

I ran a zimbra server for years but it is too heavy for this situation. iRedmail is a small mail server with a web interface that is easy to setup. I would run it in a VM or maybe even in a docker.

    omv 7.0.4-2 sandworm | 64 bit | 6.5 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 7.0 | kvm 7.0.10 | compose 7.1.2 | k8s 7.0-6 | cputemp 7.0 | mergerfs 7.0.3

omv-extras.org plugins source code and issue tracker - github

Thanks, i will try this. First in VM on Debian 9, if the solution works, i want to migrate to docker or on omv Debian.
btw im bachelor in buisness informatics, so i hope a few keywords help me to google a solution

    Found this Tutorial:
    https://docs.iredmail.org/inst…ail.on.debian.ubuntu.html

"Add your first mail domain name"
With this circumstances what is my mail domain? just domain.local?

If this tutorial works, im still clueless. How do i configure iredmail to fetch mails from my existing accounts? I dont think it is as easy as adding them in Thunderbird or Outlook?
One Inbox for all accounts would be great. But this is not necessarily the typical use case for iredmail?

  • Im not sure if i want to have a full mail server ... i think a mail client with webinterface would work, but i dont find such
Problems with accessibility, is okay. Just in case i use gmail.com/yahoo.com/... to read/write mails. So if my mailserver crash i just "loose" the backup function. (gmail& others configured to delete them after 30days)

I have no mail server and dont have experience in the whole Email world

I have only briefly tested iredmail before and I never had it fetch from existing accounts. Google is your friend here.

It is a mail server. People probably use it in many ways. If it can fetch email then it is a typical use case.

Why? A full iredmail server only uses 2GB ram.

Never seen one. roundcube is the most popular webmail interface but i don't know if it actually would be a good backup. It just logs into mail servers. iredmail uses roundcube.

Because it isn't actually sending and receiving email (just fetching), it doesn't really matter. The domain is just to access the system. You just need dns setup correctly.

  • Iredmail is very nice (auto config for all components) thanks a lot for this suggestion
But for this usecase its quite heavy... i dont neet antivirus, failban, spamassasin because the mails get scanned by the mailprovider before they arrive. And its just accesible local or via VPN
For my NAS with N3700ITX and 4GB ram 2gb are quite a lot ;) actual the Debian 9 VM run with 1gb, but netdata is already throwing alerts^^

I managed it to install iredmail and fetch mails from my exisiting mail account with fetchmail €: everything on a fresh Debian 9 VM
Using this Links:install iredmail, config fetchmail 1, config fetchmail 2
Now i will test some folder / account managment, look where data ist stored and so on, maybe get rid of clamav. Then fresh VM with shared folder for backup purposes.

    Im realy happy right now
after trying several dovecot&xyz&idk how tos, horde howto, mailpile, 2 PHP Based solutions, roundcube addon on omv3

€2: What about send mail via Roundcube through the different mail accounts? :o

You have the option to not install some of those during installation especially netdata.
