omv4 @ Fujitsu Primergy TX1310 M1 (problem)

  • Hi!

(Specs in the bottom of the post)

I have run OMV3 on my server for a while. When OMV4 was released I tried to upgrade but I couldn't mount the drives for storage.
Then I made a choice and went back to omv3.
Server works with Debian 8 not 9.

For a few days ago I decided to wipe the discs and start over.
Installed OMV4 - works perfect but I couldn't mount the drives (again). Tried to reinstall OMV4 but it still the same problem.
Searched here and on google but I can't find any solution for this.
Somewhere I read something about fake raid, but I couldn't mange to get it work.
Is the sata controller the problem?

    I have tried:
SATA, RAID in BIOS -
RAID0 on sparate discs -
Make the discs hot swapable -

I'm out of ideas and google searches.
    What could I do?
Buy a new SATA controller card? Would it help?

I appreciate every answer that can help me out.

    My final vision:
    OMV4
    Docker with:
    Domoticz (or openHAB)
    Grafana
    InfluxDB
    MagicMirror
    Plex

    Spec:
    CPU: Celeron G1820
Mobo D3219-B11 with intel C226 chipset
    RAM: 8 Gb
    6x SATA (4x RAID)

    1. That would imply that no drivers are being loaded in D9 but they are in D8 OS's usually go forward not back.

    2. What are you using for OMV's boot device? Are the drives visible under Storage -> Disks

    3. According to the manual there are three options for the sata controller;

    - AHCI (default)
    - IDE
    - Raid

The default should be the one you use, have you attached a monitor to check the boot process on screen as this will usually give information if the drives are being detected.

  • Thanks for your participation!

    1. Can I use drivers for Debian 8 to debian 9?
    2. Traditional SATA HDD on port 1. I can see the rest of the disks under storage -> disc. But I can make any file system on the other discs. OMV format the disk and says success, but the disc disappear in OMV afterwards.
    3. Yes AHCI is what I have used. Tried every option.

Right now: I have the server in the living room with keyboard and monitor (my wife are so happy =O )
I can see all the discs in BIOS/UEFI, and in OMV.

Do you think a SATA controller card would solve the problem?

My wife loves computers as well :D:D

What I would do if this was me, the system boots, shutdown, leave the boot drive in and one drive only. Install OMV-Extras and fully update the system, if you have done that -> great.

Ok backtrack, I'm a bit confused by this -> I can see the rest of the disks under storage -> disc. But I can make any file system on the other discs. OMV format the disk and says success, but the disc disappear in OMV afterwards.

Boot with 1 drive installed, Storage -> Disks select the disk and click wipe, I usually do the short option.
File Systems -> Create, select the drive , give a label and select your file system, suggest ext4
Does the drive still not display under File Systems once completed?

  • Tried Safari, MS edge, Chrome on different devices. Still the same.

    BUT:

I got some errors when I installed osv-extras on the last OMV-install attempt

  • Code
    root@openmediavault:~# wipefs -n /dev/sdb
    offset type

Crap!! I bet that is on all of them! Ok, I'm signing off now but this explains why you are having problems, it is fixable but it will take some time.

But you could connect the other drives and do the same on them and post the output but replace /dev/sdb with /dev/sd(drive reference letter) could be c or d etc.

  • YES YES YES!!
I made it, thanks to you two!

Wiped the disk totally (Secure in OMV4)
I started it last night and when I tried to make a file system and mount it = Success!!

Maybe its the only way to do it (when ZFS-code is on the disk)

Thanks all of you and especially @geaves.
    You pointed the right way!

:thumbup: There is a slightly quicker way, but this zfs signature has appeared a couple on the forum and it seems to point drives used in synology or qnap, but they seem to show up in omv 4. Well at least it's sorted, well done, and the wife gets the living room back :)
