Changing Raid1 to 2 single disks

  • Hi,
the last weeks I am experimenting with OMV - great system!

I configured my system like this:
    Mainboard: Fujitsu D3417B
    Celeron G3900
    8 GB ECC Ram
    SSD for System
    2 3TB WD Red hdd

I setup my 2 HDD as RAID 1 and I now think it would be better to use the HDDs as 2 single disks. How can I do this?
    My idea is like this:
divide the RAID - how do I do this?
    delete one of the drives.
Create a filesystem on the deleted drive
    mount the new created filesystem
copy the data from the old RAID drive to the new created
after successful copy, delete the left drive and build a new filesystem to use the drive as a backupdrive.

    Will this work?
    Any advice?

    Thanks for some help.

    Best.
    Fabian

PS: This is my first post. I am a Windows user. I have a little experience with Linux...but with a ubuntu desktop system. So please be patient ;)

    MoBo: Fujitsu D3417-B
    CPU: Intel Celeron G3900
    RAM: Samsung DDR4 - 8 GB ECC
    Case: Fractal Design Node 80
    HDD: SSD 64GB (System), 2*3TB+1*4TB (Data) + 1*4TB (Parity). UnionFS + Snapraid
    OMV 4
    Router: Fritzbox 7590

Sounds like a very good plan

I use a similar scheme but between computers with one disk each.

I don't backup everything, that allows me to have a backup system based on several versions of overlapping linked rsync snapshots.

  • Remove RAID1 configuration

For creating the backup have a look at rsync and rsnapshot.

    thanks for the Link.
The only thing I am not sure is how to unlink one disc?
    Will this work:
    1. shut down system
    2. Take out one drive (physically - unplug it)
    3. Wipe the drive with a different system
    4. Put it in the Openmediavault PC
    5. Reboot
    6. Copy all data

    Any advice?

    Thanks!

  • It would be great to get a hint if my solution will work. Or any advice how to take out one disk out of the raid.
    Thanks for the help.

Should work. After pulling the drive and before wiping I would start up OMV to make sure that the remaining drive of the RAID is accessible. Should be marked as "degraded" in status, but the data should be still available.

To be safe you should also have an additional backup of your data.

  • Thanks for the help. I managed :)
