Hello.
One of my external drives became dislodged.
When I reconnected it, everything seemed to work okay but, when I go into: Storage > File System, It tells me that one of my devices is missing: /dev/disk/by-label/raid1 Status: Missing.
I'm now at a loss as to how I can resolve this issue.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
If you need more info please let me know.
File systems problem.

If the drive is not available when OMV boots up or is disconnected while OMV is up and running, it's "missing". If you haven't done so, try rebooting with the external drive powered on and ready, when OMV is booted up.

Hi flmaxey
Thanks for your response.
I followed your instructions but the problem still persists! -
When you say "dislodged", what do you mean? If you bump a drive hard enough, it can result in a bad head crash. It might be time to hook the drive up to another PC and test it with a live distro.
-
Basically, I moved the stand on which the drive was located. This resulted in the power cable accidentally being disconnected temporarily. I'm sure the said drive is working as it should. Do you think I should test it with a live distro?
-
I'm sure the said drive is working as it should.
Without testing, there's no way to know this .
Do you think I should test it with a live distro?
Yes, as previously mentioned, that's a good idea.
Before you do that, can you see the drive in OMV under Storage, Physical Disks? (You may have to use the scan button.) If not, it's time to hook it up to another PC just to see if the PC recognizes that a drive is attached. (It it's recognized, don't format it.)
From there I'd try to look at the disk with a live Linux distro.
-
Yes, all drives are listed.
-
First, in Storage, Files Systems; see if it's there. If it is, try to mount it.
-
It is there but its status is; Missing.
It won't let me mount it. -
Since it's an external drive that can be connected to a Windows PC, check SMART stat's in Windows with something like Crystal Disk Info or get a live distro like Knoppix to, potentially, mount the drive and look at it's file contents.
-
knoppix wont allow me to mount the drive.
I get an error message:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sde1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error.
It then suggests:
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so
Now I'm a bit lost! -
What filesystem is on the drive? (I assumed EXT4) If the drive is formatted NTFS, Knoppix wouldn't recognize it out of the box.
What happened with a Windows PC and Crystal Disk Info?
Did the PC recognize that a drive was attached? (If the file system is EXT4, Windows might offer to format it. Don't do that.) -
The filesystem is EXT4.
Crystal Disk says that it's healthy.
The PC didn't recognise that a drive was attached. -
Can you SSH in, and have you tried (as root) to mount the drive on command line?
mount /dev/sd? Where "?" is the drive that is missing in the file systems window.
What's the output?
__________________________________________If that doesn't work, you could run fsck on the drive, from the command line.
(fsck for EXT4 is the Linux equivalent of chkdsk for NTFS, in Windows.)fsck /dev/sd?The potential outputs of the command can be found -> here. Before doing this know the risk; just as it is with chkdsk for NTFS, fsck can do things that might result in the loss of data.

Hi flmaxey
I'm getting in far too deep!
I honestly feel the only way out is to reset UI to defaults and start all over again.
I really appreciate your time and effort but I'm struggling with all of this. -
I wasn't trying to overwhelm you. (It's hard to judge a users experience level with a couple posts.)
I went back and read your first post and, for some reason, I missed that this drive is part of a RAID1 array. (I homed in on "drive missing".) For some reason, mdadm (software RAID) kicked the drive out of the array so, I'm assuming that you're running on a single drive and that your data is available.
In any case, any kind of RAID over USB is a bad idea.
If you're willing to start over, consider using this guide to setup and take a look at backup. Since you have two disks, there's a way to backup your data, using Rsync, that doesn't involve getting on the command line. An Rsync drive-to-drive backup is far superior to RAID1, for many reasons, but what may be of the most interest to you is, recovering from a drive failure is easy and can be done in the GUI.
((BTW: it's possible to copy your data from the drive remaining in RAID1 array, to the second drive that got kicked from the array, if you reformat the second drive. ))
Do you have anything important in the array?
-
My array comprises of 4 x 1.82 TiB external HDDs; /dev/sda, /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd, /dev/sde (which is where the problem lies). My internal drive is /dev/sdb @ 149.01 GiB, which is were OMV is installed.
My setup comprises of:
Backups - of which I have offline copies.
Documents - no offline copies.
Movies - of which I have offline copies.
Music - no offline copies.
Software - no offline copies. This is the one that I'm gutted about!! -
The RAID1 array is still up, right? With one drive missing, it should be "degraded".
Or is the entire array "missing"?
-
It is missing.
-
It reads: /dev/disk/by-label/raid1 | ext4 | Missing
