OMV 6 and installation on RAID

  • Good day!

    Sorry for my bad english.

I want install OMV (in future) on HP MicroServer G7 N54L. I have 5 hdd (sda, sdb, sdc, sdd, sde). I want do RAID1 (sda2+sdb2+sdc2+sdd2+sde2) for / (and install on it OMV). After I want build RAID5 (sda1+sdb1+sdc1+sdd1+sde1) in web interface OMV for storage of NSA.

Will you do it is possible in OMV6?

    Thank you!

  • RAID1 over 5 disks? wtf? do a clonezilla backup after installing and configuring. A 5 disk RAID1 is way too overpowered.

Alltough I will create a feature request on the bugtracker for you later. (at work now)

    Greetings
    David

David is saying raid 1 on 5 disks is too much. I wouldn't run a raid1 array on the same physical disks as a raid5 array either.

  • RAID1 from 5 devices for GRUB. If one disk will be destroyed GRUB is still will work.
I do this scheme on Debian 6 (I'm installed OMV5 on Debian, Debian was installed on RAID1). It work, but RAID5 from sda2+sdb2+sdc2+sdd2+sde2 from web interface I can't create. If I create RAID5 from console (mdadm) in web interface I see new RAID (5) and I can work this it.

If possible I want see in future working with logical devices (sda1, sda2 etc...) and possible to install on soft raid (like in Debian 6/7).

    Thank you very much!

  • By the way...

After update kernel RAID5 (md1) not assembled. I scaned (mdadm --assemble --scan), changed /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf and assemble RAID (mdadm --assemble /dev/md1 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2 /dev/sdd2 /dev/sde2). After it md1 is working.

  • OMV (Volker) seperates the OS from the data partitions for a reason. For normal Users it is way easier if the OS drive fails, or a data disk, to just replace the disk, than to care about such a 'weird' setup. Keep in mind that OMV is designed to be used in a SOHO environment! I would suggest to use another two, small disks in a RAID1 configuration if you need this redundancy. But I, personally, never would do it like you want to do!

Also on a side note, OMV can only create a single partition per disk/array. However OMV can manage multiple partitions per Disk if they were set up with the commandline or something like gparted/parted magic. So this is a normal behaviour.
