How to work with Certificates

  • Hi,

I succesfull created a self signed cetrificate in OMV.

When I next time want to access the webgui of OMV must this then be with https://192.xxx.xxx.xxx ?
I fear that when I logout that I can not login with just http:// again.

I think the browser need the certificate too. How I get the cerficate into my browser ? There is an import function in the browser, but which file I have to import ? ?

Will this certicate also work for owncloud ? ?

If you want only ssl connection to your OMV you need to force ssl by putting checkmark at:

System/General Settings, then on right Web Administration, then below at Force SSL/TLS

Before you put check here then apply and save make sure you have tested your ssl and were able to login to your omv with the ssl activated. If you do not put check mark on Force SSL/TLS you will still be able to access your OMV with http. Instead of putting checkmark you can put in firewall rule that would only allow http connection on your LAN. Sometimes SSL connections are slower because of encryption.

With owCloud I allow http connections only on my lan. SSL is slow with ownCloud so on my LAN i connect via http but because of my firewall rules no one outside of my lan can connect to it via http. Just something to keep in mind with ssl.

I thought it's good for security reasons to always have ssl activated ( for OMV and owncloud )

Isn't that neccessary in my local network. I don't want that the outside world can intrude into
    my NAS.

    ( How can I test my SSL ) .

I'm not able to import the created certificate into my browser. How can I manage that.

    Added:

Just found how to test SSL by not activating "Force secure connection only"

    That didn't work . I can't log in via the webGUI again ! ! !

    Software ERROR - Session not authorized ! ! !

I hope I can fix this via the console. I need some advice.

  • On the air again ! ! ;)

I did it with the IE.

But can you pls answer my other questions . THX

    Added:

oops - now it works with IE and there is SSL deactivated. I shut down and wake up the NAS and then OPERA
    generates same auth error ? ? ?

    Added:

I cleared the cache of OPERA and now it works with OPERA too, but ownCloud now doesn't work amymore ? ?

So that's it for tonight, that was too much stress, check that later.

  • Tekkbebe, its a pain in the ass to install a custome SSL certificate 'into' chrome... I love firefox for that, simply accept it. Done.

  • Until Chrome gets a good tab management it can go to hell*

  • Seriously. They got the first feature request in 2009 (!) and still not one of the developers care to open the tab management for the plugin developers! You could cry about that...

  • Hi,

as mentioned, I succeed in creating a certificate in OMV.

But can somebody pls explain, how I create the certificate file that I must load into the browser.
    ( OPERA oder FF )

I already tried to copy the certificate created in OMV in a txt file and named it X509xyz.usr

OPERA produced an error message. FF I will try later

  • On Firefox you simply can accept the 'shown' certificate permanent, when you access the Webgui.

On Chrome you need to download it via the favicon, [...], and then import it to your system trusted ssl certifactes (you may have to look the exact procedure up on google). It's simply a pain in the ass...

I have to pass on Opera.

I'll try later with FF . Is it not necessary to import a cert file into FF ? ? that seems to be easy.

But I hope I can solve the prob in OPERA ( 12.16 ) too, bcs. is my absolute favorite.

Has the fewest leaks for years, is fast, perfect for customizing and has an intecrated mailclient
which fullfill my needs. Has only about 2% marketshare, so it's not of interest for criminals.

Unfortunately OPERA stopped 12.16 with their own engine and now push OPERA 18+ with cromium engine.
Never will use any google browser or affiliated products.
