• Hi all

I finally decided to show my "geek-ness" :)

I switched some weeks ago from a C2D in a mini ITX case to something more fun (but expensive). I created a DIY server rack and found some good 4U rackmout cases : one for my hypervisor, and an other for my overclocked gaming i7.

The rack is still messy because I need to find more stuff (PDU and RJ45 panel should be the next enhancements). The costs approximatively 300 € of materials.

The server itself is built from a Sapphire mainboard with LGA 1366 socket. I re-used a Noctua heatsink with 2 Noctua 14 cm fans. The noise comes from the power supply (I need to hack it to add a Noctua fan here). The server is now clocked at its nominal speed and the I7 940 (quad core) runs at less than 25°C. It uses 12 GB of DDR3 with quite standard latency. I cannot close the case because I discovered the vendors lies about their heatsink height : they do not include the caloduc pipe ends. Not an issue for me.

The whole system is in a 10 hotswap 3.5" rackmout case, with 1 good old 500 Gb hard drive for Proxmox 3.1 and his VM/CT. The OMV filer uses dedicated 2 TB HDD as a RAID 1 array. A third drive is configured as a spare on this array.

No backup for now... I'm still searching for a community based online storage with some features. tahoe-LAFS is the best candidate but it still missing a quota feature... :(

  • Hi

I did not had enough time yesterday to take pics of the server : I have to dismount the other case 1 U above it...

The lackrack makde me laugh : this is a great idea : the whole family and friends playing a mmorpg each on a side of this the table :D

    = latest setup =
    proxmox VE 6 hypervisor on a J1900 CPU + 8GB RAM
guests : OpenWRT (VM), OMV 5 (VM), Samba 4 domain controller (LXC)
OMV alive since 2011 I guess : never crashed, always upgraded : stronger than my hard drives.

Searching for a P2P online storage solution : must be open source, client side encrypted, quota supprt. Tahoe LAFS is the nearest, but is lacking quota. Would be perfect to build a OMV based, anonymous online storage for backups
