Now for the steps:

- Insert both the OMV install media and the USB stick in the machine you want to install OMV on
- Boot the machine from the OMV install media

First - as I understand the second usb Stick should be formatted FAT32 but EMPTY?

I have a Asus H87i-plus Motherboard, I created the bootable Stick with the openmediavault_0.5.0.24_amd64.iso Image
using the Windows Tool unetbootin recommended on the installation guide
What have i done wrong? any suggestions?
