[Solved] help w/ atheros ar8151 ethernet

  • First let me tell you: I am a complete linux noob. So i'm going to need things explained in detail.

When I try to install OMV no ethernet card is found. I do some searches and find this:

    http://forums.openmediavault.o…wtopic.php?p=13378#p13378

My understanding is that it is easy to install omv on top of debian squeeze. i started installing the custom ISO in the post, this time ethernet drivers found. but the installer freezes at 1% close to the end during the select and install software. I've tried other debian ISO files they seem to install properly but they dot recognize the ethernet card.

    Ideas?

  • Can you throw in a pci slot and pci-e nic so you can install backports kernel???

You need to install OMV Extras. Once that is done there is a button you can click on to install backports kernel.

The backports kernel has more drivers and that may get your nic going.

I checked and the ar8151 will work once backports is installed. Once you have the /system/OMV Extras icon in the web-gui of OMV there will be a button in the right window to install backports kernel. It is all automoated. You just click on the button and let backports install. Once installed just reboot and your nic should then work.

  • I have an available pci/pcie slot.

Are saying I would need to buy a network card in order to install the backports kernel (and get the ar8151 working)?
If so, why not just use the new card?

I have a wireless network card if that helps any.

Look forward to getting this thing working. I appreciate the response.

  • The wireless card may be tricky. So you don't have any old cards laying around?? Yeah, I am saying we need to temporarily put in another card to get the Atheros nic working.

  • unfortunately not. If i purchase a new one, would there be any point of even making the ar85151 work? because i'm assuming w/e i purchase would be an upgrade. Is it an issue of power consumption?

  • Hi.
A friend of me had the same problem with another ethernet card.
He installed a custom Squeeze from here: http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i/ (squeeze-custom-amd64-0315.iso).
    It contains kernel 3.2.4.
With this install his network card was found and he could install omv via apt.

Have you tried Wheezy ? (omv 0.6 works very well !!)

  • This is good suggestion by tchensie. Once Squeeze, or Wheezy, is installed with a kernel that has a driver that will work with the atheros you can simply install OMV on top.

I have tried that custom squeeze iso. It is recognized but the installer doesnt complete. It gets hung up at 1% at the installing software phase just before installing the GRUB loader (whatever that is). I ordered an intel NIC to give a whirl.

Since we are on the topic of 0.6: Is that out? I thought .5.48 was the latest and greatest.
