Mirror RAID with existing file system

  • Hello, first just want to say thanks for OMV. Loving it so far.

So I just bought a new hard drive, which is a duplicate of the existing drive I have in my OMV machine. I want to set up a mirror RAID (RAID 1), but I already have a file system on the existing drive in the machine. I really don't want to lose the data on the drive. Is it possible to set up RAID 1 without deleting the data from the existing drive? If not, is it possible to move a file system to another drive if I connected another drive to the machine?

    Thanks!

It is definitely possible to move to another drive connected to the machine and then create the raid 1 array. I can help with more details - hard drive sizes, amount of data, etc.

  • Sure thing:

I have two WDC WD30EZRX-00D drives with 2.73 TiB storage. The drive at /dev/sda has six shared folders, using 372.32 GiB of data. Let me know what else you need.

    Thanks!

Do you have a third drive (400+ gb) to move the data to?

  • I can if I can find a drive that I can use. I was hoping I didn't need to since this case only fits two hds (using an old HTPC case), but I can figure something out.

You wouldn't have to mount it. It could sit on the bottom of the case with the side open temporarily. There really is no way to convert it to raid 1. Do you have another computer on your network with enough space to temporarily hold the files?

I would recommend using rsync. So, try the following:

Create a filesystem on new external.
Create a shared folder on new external for each shared folder on source drive.
Create rsync job (type local) for each folder and run it. This will copy all files to new external.

Once you are sure the files are on the new external, you can:
Remove all uses of the shares from source drive.
Remove shared folders from source drive.
    Wipe source drive.
Create raid 1 array - let it sync before moving on.
Create filesystem on raid 1 array.
Create shared folders on raid 1 array.
Create rsync jobs to copy files to raid 1 array.

Hard not to. You could take screen shots of the current settings to set them back up.

How often do the files change on your drive? Do you need real time mirroring or could it be scheduled every day, every hour, etc?

Install openmediavault-rsnapshot. Works very well and can keep multiple backups on a timed basis.
