OMV on Pentium 4 HT

  • Hello,
i cant find any info about this config in web... If anyone can tell me am i wrong...
I have OMV installation on Intel Pentium 4 [3Ghz] procesor, which supports Hyper threading technology, but i cant manage to activate it. while i search for some info, i found that, the i386 architecture isnt compatible with intel HT. as far as i686 debian kernel have intel HTT support.
howewer, i cant find any OMV iso with 686 arch.
Is this safe to manually change kernel under OMV without any further complications? or there is another way to make system recognizing two threads in Pentium 4?

Thanks for any help - Ivox.

    Which P4 are you using?

You can change the kernel. Read this.

    omv 7.0.5-1 sandworm | 64 bit | 6.5 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 7.0 | kvm 7.0.11 | compose 7.1.3 | k8s 7.1.0-3 | cputemp 7.0 | mergerfs 7.0.3

omv-extras.org plugins source code and issue tracker - github - changelogs

  • I have pentium 4 HT 3.0 (or 3.2ghz) socket mpga478 (im not sure, but i think its prescott) on this machine.
if changing kernel to i686 under working OMV installation do not affect on system, or provide any incompatibilites after changing, i'll try to follow this topic on forum.
    Thank you :)
    Ivox.

  • Thank you, i have updated kernel to 3.2.0 i686, and it can start.
but system works unstable, need package updates. Are this packages for i384 compatible with i686?
i cannot find any debian i686 package sources, and still updating to i386 arch packages.
does this need any more solution?
    Thank you
    Ivox

Only the kernel has different packages because they are configured for multiple cores/threads and memory over 4gb. While I think it is great to repurpose old equipment, pentium 4s are energy hogs and most are not 64 bit compatible. Do you need multiple cores?

  • i want to enable second thread, because im running on it OMV, and some other things like TS3 or Transmission. When all are used in same time at peak sometimes system is heavily overloaded. I think its the best way to increase stability and overall performance of this machine. for now CPU is recognized as 1 core, while 686 kernel recognizes 2 cores well, but throwing many errors including apache2 and OMV couldnt start properly

  • I have also a P4 3.0 ghz HT processor and i have HT enabled.

    Code
    apt-cache search linux-image

Search for the right kernel, this is the one you must install: linux-image-3.2.0-0.bpo.4-686-pae

    Code
    apt-get install linux-image-3.2.0-0.bpo.4-686-pae

Reboot, done. HT enabled and rock solid without any problems.
