How to compile and install PowerTOP 2.6.1

  • Since the PowerTOP package in the Debian repository is from around 2012, I looked into getting PowerTOP 2.6.1 to squeeze some more powersavings out of my NAS.
Here is how it is done:

    Happy powersavings!

Here is the amd64 .deb package compiled on wheezy. Much easier to remove if something doesn't work right. It was created from the Debian Jessie files here.

    omv 7.0-32 sandworm | 64 bit | 6.5 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 7.0 | kvm 7.0.9 | compose 7.0.9 | cputemp 7.0 | mergerfs 7.0.3

omv-extras.org plugins source code and issue tracker - github

You can only upload plugins via the web interface (openmediavault-). Just so you know, this isn't a plugin and is used from the command line.

    Install manually as root:

    wget http://omv-extras.org/testing/powertop_2.6.1-1_amd64.deb
    dpkg -i powertop_2.6.1-1_amd64.deb
apt-get -f install if any dependency errors

  • Short addendum, if there is still a powertop folder in /tmp you can uninstall PowerTop easily by running make uninstall in that folder.
Ryecoaaron's method of installing PowerTop is preferred over my method! Like he said, much easier to remove if something doesn't work right.

  • Hi

Has anyone accomplished to install Powertop 2.8 in wheezy?

The .deb from SID won't install and via automake from source I am stuck with this error:

    Code
configure.ac:26: warning: The 'AM_PROG_MKDIR_P' macro is deprecated, and its use is discouraged

  • I have not tried compiling it but nowadays I use TLP for power management. Does the same thing and has a repository for easy install ;)

I wouldn't do this for any package...

  • OK :)

    @iddqd

TLP works fine, thax. But still no idea where my extra 10w went....

This is probably a dumb question but 10W extra power draw from your OMV box?

Is PowerTop suitable for desktop or just laptop?
There is a nice program call PowerStat.

But itsn't Powerstat not more a measurement tool? Both PowerTOP and TLP are powermanagement tools and make powermanagement easier on laptops and on dekstops/servers.

  • I just installed PowerTop, and I notice that the Wat is not there.

    Got this error:

    Code
    sudo powertop
    Cannot load from file /var/cache/powertop/saved_results.powertop
    Cannot load from file /var/cache/powertop/saved_parameters.powertop
    RAPL device for cpu 0
    RAPL device for cpu 0
    RAPL device for cpu 0
    Cannot load from file /var/cache/powertop/saved_parameters.powertop

    32GB RAM Corsair Vengeance Pro

It used to be 24w and now it is 36w - so about 12w. This equals an increase of 50% so even if it only comes down to 22€/year I think it is worth looking into..although for now I have failed to figure out where it went...

Since these files do no exist prior to running PowerTOP, those messages are not error messages.

What changed in the meantime? Did you install plugins? Did you update something? Do you use a newer kernel?
