Backup

  • Hello,

I have just made my NAS with OPV!
I do have one question, how can i make backups?

Let me explain, my PC ahs two 2 TB hardrives, lets call it Data1 and Data2!
I used the same name on the OVP NAS, and i want these 2 disks to be backed up do the NAS.

    How can I do this?
Shoul i configure something on the NAS? Or rather configure a software on my PC?

Also another question, how can I access my files on the NAS, out of my network (outside my house) on another PC or on an Android phone?
    Thank you for your help.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Hi!

    Backup:
There are several ways to do Backups. Ask two people and you get three opinions. ;) Just a few names, too google: rsync, xcopy, robocopy. My Personal Choice is SyncBack from http://www.2brightsparks.com
In a nutshell: You need a share, that you can access from Windows - for example via SMB/CIFS. Than you could do copy & paste. But I would recomment an automatic Solution.

    Webaccess:
Think about, what you want to do. I would never show all my files in the web. Then check out the Owncloud-Plugin. :)

  • Hello, and thank you for your fast answer.

Regarding the backup i have already the 2 disks in the NAS being shared to my desktop PC.
So, the best option is to use a program that will backup my 2 HDD on the PC to the 2 shared folders in my NAS?

Regarding the second question, this is something I need, my personal cloud :)

Yes! It depents on your taste, which type of program you prefer. I prefer SyncBack Pro, because it can backup many things - for example IMAP-Servers too. Or when I plugin a USB-Stick - it copies only data, when the right (!!) stick is plugged in.
It shows exactly, what it would do if you start the backup. And you nearly can finetune anything (Example). Start with the Free-Edition and if you need more, you can upgrade. Support is great. But be warned: The Manual for the Pro-Version is about is about 400 Letter-Pages when you print them - which I did. Bud I don't needed to reed anything. :D
This is the manual for an easy Backup-Task.

Don't use several programs for backup, syncing and mirroring. Grab one tool for those tasks and get confided with it. This is the best, you can do... :)

  • Regarding the backup I'm already served, thank you.
All i need now is to access my NAS out of my network, on a PC or android phone.

    It's always saying this...

    EDIT:
I have read this thread and it seemed to be the trouble: http://phpbb.openmediavault.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1307

I wrote "ipconfig /all" on cmd i discovered my ISP DNS server, and now i get another error:

    Zitat

    Err http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates/main php5 all 5.4.4-14+deb7u14
Unable to connect to security.debian.org:http: [IP: 212.211.132.32 80]

  • Yes i have, and i have used my ISP DNS.
Now i have tried the luink you gave me and used 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, and i'm still having the same problem...
