My R410 based OMV backup server

  • This is probably way overkill, but wanted to post my build in here...if you can call it a build

I purchase a new Dell R410 1U rack, as I am building a server area for all my home networking equipment in my garage.

Processor: dual 5520L low power 2.26GHZ processors
    Memory: 16GB PC3-10600 ECC Memory
    Hard drives: 4x 4TB WD Red Nasware 3.0 drives in RAID-10 w/ 1MB Stripe
    Controller: PERC H700 w/512GB cache + BBU
RAC: DRAC 6i enterprise (thank you ebay)

probably overkill, but I'm going to be using this for house-wide backups of my laptop+2 desktops, as well as backups of a few VMs, so wanted something beefy, and for the price I paid, it was a relative steal.

No pictures yet, but as a R410 is nothing unique, you can google it :) It was a tough choice between freenas (used years ago), OMV, Windows Storage Spaces, but OMV won in my book for the reviews, the way it looks, the ease of installation (though dedicated hard drive is kinda lame), and the ability to bind Nics in LACP sold me.

Hope to have nothing but good come from this once I get my rack installed.

Is that thing running VMs or transcoding?

If you want a very solid, reliable server, having the OS on its own drive is a good idea. If you really want to use the OS drive, repartition it or install Debian Wheezy (and then OMV) to setup the drive layout you want.

It is in his garage so he probably won't care about noise :)

I had a 1U server in my office at work for a few years. Glad it is gone :)
