OpenMediaVault Backup

  • Hey,

I've just installed the OMV-Backup Plugin to Backup my System-Disk.
Now I've looked for an Guide to setup, but I haven't found one...

I have absolutely no idea what I have to do that the Plugin will backup my system, and, thats much more important, what I have to do in case my system is broken.

I even can't configure a path where the setup should store the Backup, only the Disk can be chosen.
Whats about all the other tabs? Do I need all of them? (Excepting PhotoRec and Extundelete).

    What I want:

    - Save a backup of the systemdisk every x days (automatically would be perfect)
    - Prepare the system for recovery (And it will be nice to know how to do the recovery in case I need it)

    Thank you VERY much!

The various tabs in the backup plugin allow different backup/restore/utlity functions. The SystemBackup tab will backup your system drive but the restore is not for the novice. Clonezilla allows you to clone the drive and the tab will let you boot once into Clonezilla to do this. Ideally, your system drive won't change that much (other than logs) and you shouldn't need to back it up except for when you change something.

I am working on a REAR (relax-and-recover) tab that will allow you to backup your system while running and create images for restore media. The backup is one command and this could run as a Scheduled Job if you really wanted.

  • REAR sounds VERY nice and I'm sure it would be perfectly for me ;)

But until your work is done I'll feeling saver with a Backup-File on my Disk ;)

So, sorry for this dumb question:

    I think I'll prefer Clonezilla.
So only the tab Clonezilla is important to me, right?

Have i walk through all 3 "steps" (Buttons)??
    - Installation ( Ok, got that, it's necessary, but still not done)
    - Clonezilla (As I understood I have to this once to create the Backup-file. right?)
    - OMV - Whats this button for?

Sorry, I'm really unsure what I have to do...

Yes, the Clonezilla tab is probably the only one important to you right now.

The clonezilla boot is to set your system to boot once from Clonezilla on the next reboot. When you exit clonezilla, it will boot omv again. The omv button is to set OMV to boot on the next reboot in case your don't want clonezilla to boot.

There are good clonezilla tutorials on this forum and other places.

rear has issues with backup to local drives. Remote locations or usb sticks/drives are ok. Until the local backup is fixed, I won't release it.
